THE AMATEUR CHAMPIONSHIP

June 17, 2026

Wilhelm Ryding

Hoylake, Merseyside, England, United Kingdom

Quick Quotes

Q. That's through the first round. You've done it the hard way, I suppose. It was a tough day.

WILHELM RYDING: It was a battle. It was a battle the whole way. I made a lot of pars. Told myself not to making a bogey, and I made two. I fell one or 2-down.

Loran made a couple of more birdies than I did. I just tried to make pars. He was up the whole way. But in the stretch there, I just tried to keep it in play. I did, and then made some good pars coming in.

Q. You've got your battle to tell. You were 1-down after --

WILHELM RYDING: I was 1-down after 15 and then won 16, 17. Was 1-up and then tied the last.

Q. What happened on 16? Did he go out of bounds?

WILHELM RYDING: Yeah, he went out of bounds. Then I got the hole.

Q. Once the momentum switches --

WILHELM RYDING: Especially it was good for me starting. I was 2-down heading into 14. Won that hole. So I was able to hit first on 16. To just see the ball in the fairway there was great.

Then, I mean, it's tough. It's a tough hole. I went off the left, too. You try to get it down there too so you can reach it on in two. It could happen to anyone.

Q. It's sometimes nice to get a pretty tough game straight away, isn't it?

WILHELM RYDING: Yeah.

Q. To really get you going.

WILHELM RYDING: Hopefully only going to get easier from here. Probably not. A lot of good players out here.

Q. That stands you in good stead. You played the full 18 as well.

WILHELM RYDING: Yeah, that was fun.

Q. It keeps you good. Confidence just building and momentum as well.

WILHELM RYDING: Definitely is. Need to practice some putting, but I'll be there tomorrow.

Q. How many birdies would you have had today? Not many presumably.

WILHELM RYDING: No, two.

Q. Did that one come on 14?

WILHELM RYDING: No, that was a par. He hit it left on 14. I just tried to hit fairways and greens. I missed a couple of greens and made some dumb bogeys, but --

Q. On the whole it doesn't matter. Par on a tricky day like today, that will work.

WILHELM RYDING: It was definitely tricker for sure. You've had some longer clubs in today in the wind, which has been a little bit different from yesterday and the day before, but it's been fun. It's been fun and challenging for sure.
