Quick Quotes
Q. We went the full distance and more. Through the first round. Just talk us through that tight tussle today.
YUKI MIYA: Yeah, I definitely had it going during the round. I think I made six birdies, but also gave away a few with I think six bogeys. I was 2-up, three to play, and then lost 16 and 17 and somehow managed a half on 18 and won the hole on 19. That was a good finish.
Q. You were out of bounds on 16?
YUKI MIYA: Yeah, I went out of bounds on 16. Just pushed one right. Sort of a loss of focus, I guess. I think I got a bit ahead of myself, but yeah, it's good to get it done.
Q. I suppose no lead is big enough in these last three or four holes here.
YUKI MIYA: No, no lead is big enough at all. Especially 17 is such a tough hole into the wind today as well. He had a good shot in there, but I sort of gave him the hole with a bogey. Yeah, it was good.
Q. The wee little fist pump on 18 kind of signified, underlined the significance of that moment. What was that put, maybe 8 feet?
YUKI MIYA: It was about 8, 9 feet. I knew I needed to make it because he only had about a 3-footer. Yeah, it was good to get it in the hole.
Q. Then up the first playoff hole, I had to leave actually, but how did that unravel?
YUKI MIYA: We both missed green by quite a bit. We both hit about 30, 40 metres into the hole. Then we both hit it to a similar distance, about 12, 15 feet. He missed his, and I was able to make mine. So two good putts to finish and win the match.
Q. Great feeling. Your first appearance at The Amateur Championship?
YUKI MIYA: Yeah, it is.
Q. Is it everything you expected?
YUKI MIYA: Yeah, absolutely. All the wind, all the courses, they're all unreal. Unreal experiences. Yeah, I've got to keep it going.
Q. You had a nice little tune-up north of the border. You played in the Links Trophy a couple of rounds at St Andrews?
YUKI MIYA: It was my first time in Europe. It was good to get those couple of rounds in. Although I did miss the cut, great learnings. I feel like I brought it here, yeah. Lucky to go.
Q. I believe there was a sneaky little visit in Muirfield as well, is that right?
YUKI MIYA: Yeah, it was good. Our national coach had a friend of a member there, and he was able to get us on. That was a really cool experience. All the history there was really cool.
Q. You're a pretty quick learner. I suppose you have to be in events like this, do you, to the links game? What's the one thing that you've kind of picked up in the last couple of weeks?
YUKI MIYA: We don't have too much links courses in New Zealand, so it was definitely new. I think ball control is just the biggest thing, and also short game is something I really struggled with last week at St Andrews, and I feel like I've done a better job of that this week.
