THE AMATEUR CHAMPIONSHIP

June 16, 2026

Hamish Farquharson

Hoylake, Merseyside, England, United Kingdom

Quick Quotes

Q. Hamish, 3-under 69. Can you talk us through that nice round to hopefully secure a place in the match play stages?

HAMISH FARQUHARSON: Yeah, it was good. Holed a few putts early, got the momentum going, then had a good back nine. Birdied the last, which was nice. Kept the putts rolling.

Yeah, it was good to keep the good shots coming, and I saved a lot of shots out there. It was good to kind of -- yeah, I wasn't playing my best, but just kind of kept grinding away.

Q. Coming down to the last, did you think you maybe needed one extra birdie? Should be safe at 3-under obviously, but you never know. What do you think to maybe get one here and that's rubber stamped?

HAMISH FARQUHARSON: I wasn't checking the leaderboards. I probably should have in hindsight. I thought 2-under would be safe, and if I made a birdie, that would have been a bonus.

I was glad to make a birdie. Holed a good little 10-footer on the last, and yeah, got myself the best possible position to make match play.

Q. Absolutely. There's quite a sizable Aussie contingent here. Kind of mixed fortunes, I suppose. That's quite a well-trodden path, you coming over to these isles and playing links golf. Have you enjoyed it?

HAMISH FARQUHARSON: It's been awesome. We were up in St Andrews last week. It's a dream. You see it on TV. We don't have much links golf back home, so it's been a joy to play the true test of golf, some say, and then to play well too, better.

Q. Coming into these weeks with these previous experiences north of the border, has that helped some of the game and the thinking and the shot making?

HAMISH FARQUHARSON: It's just a totally different game up here. Even in the U.S., it's totally different. The flights, the different shots they have to play around the greens as well, it's totally different.

It's been good to learn the past few weeks and kind of adjust to different conditions, and I felt like I've done that pretty well. So hopefully I can build on it.

Q. Match play-wise, is that a format that you revel in?

HAMISH FARQUHARSON: Yeah, I love it. Back home I did match play in our state series. I did pretty well. So, yeah, I love the one-on-one type scenario. Can't wait for that, and hopefully I can advance.

Q. Keep going, yes. I think our colleague was saying there's been quite a lot of the previous generation obviously turn professional. This is now obviously a new wave of quite a lot of young lads. It's all part of the experience, though, isn't it, and just kind of filling that? It's a cyclical game golf, isn't it? That's the thing.

HAMISH FARQUHARSON: It's tough. We're trying our best. We're inspired, to be honest, by the guys that come previous to us. Even Billy Dowling a couple years ago, he's done well here, especially at the amateur. So we look up to those guys and try to emulate what they do and just try to be like them a little bit.

Q. You'll have plenty of support from your fellow Aussies over the next couple of days hopefully.

HAMISH FARQUHARSON: Yeah, hopefully. I'm not sure how they're going. I know some of them did well today. Hopefully I can get some support out there.
