Quick Quotes

Q. Talk about the day and talk about the week. From your standpoint on, is it a good tuneup now for U.S. Open going in?

ALEX FITZPATRICK: Absolutely, yeah. That played like a major championship out there. It certainly wasn't easy. I think only having two milkshakes this week was probably the key to playing well in the last round. But, no, it's a great test out there. I played really nicely today. I finally holed some putts, so it was nice shoot a low one and see where that leaves me.

Q. Did you think you had a chance when you started the day?

ALEX FITZPATRICK: No, no, not even close. I just said to someone over there, I've been playing kind of without my driver since the 13th hole on Thursday. My driver broke literally in the bag. Just kind of the shaft just snapped. So I had one, like, a backup, but it doesn't feel anything like the same. So there was a lot of 3-woods out there. But I played really nicely even though I didn't have a driver. So, yeah, didn't feel like I had a chance, but I kept hitting great shots and getting the rewards from it.

Q. At what point did you think maybe differently or did you ever?

ALEX FITZPATRICK: I'll be honest, I hit a great iron shot into the last and had 20 feet, and I thought I made it, to be fair. It was kind of one of them it looked like it was going in the whole way. Obviously walking up and seeing I think a couple guys dropped down to 10, I thought, well, if I can get in the clubhouse at 9 and put a bit of pressure on, then you never know with the closing holes. But, yeah, I'm just happy to be here. It's been a crazy year for me, so I'm just trying to keep enjoying it.

Q. It's hard to believe nowadays that you couldn't find a driver for the last two rounds. Is it one of those things where you had one before or --

ALEX FITZPATRICK: I'll be honest, I would say it's my own fault because I carry a head rather than a shaft, mainly to keep the bag light for when I travel so I don't get charged excess baggage (laughing). But that's because I'm from Yorkshire.

But yeah, I had a backup one sent to me and it just didn't feel the same, and at that point it was too late, so I just had to use what I had.

Q. Let's just confirm, to be honest, you really don't do that for excess baggage, do you?

ALEX FITZPATRICK: No, no. Well, no. I've been tempted, but, no. Yeah, it's just really frustrating. I feel like I hit a lot of drives out there that I just really didn't know where the ball was going. But I had my driver in the first round for the first 13 holes and drove it great. So it was just frustrating knowing that I don't feel like I have 14 clubs in my bag that I know what they're going to do. But, yeah, I would take a broken driver and shooting what I did today.

Q. What's your week look like coming up?

ALEX FITZPATRICK: I'm going to --

Q. Are you going to Canada?

ALEX FITZPATRICK: I am. I'll play the next three. So Canada, U.S. Open, Travelers, so a nice stretch of golf.

Q. Why are you playing Canada?

ALEX FITZPATRICK: Always wanted to play. I've heard it's great. Lots of fans.

Q. I'm not judging you.

ALEX FITZPATRICK: No, no. I've heard the fans are amazing. I've actually played -- I think I played the golf course before. I played six events on PGA TOUR Canada, and I think they might mix and match some holes, I'm not sure, so I'm at least familiar with it. And just always wanting to play the Canadian Open.

Q. What do you know about Shinnecock?

ALEX FITZPATRICK: I went last week and it was unplayable (laughing). So it was blowing, like, 35 miles an hour and there wasn't a ball that could hold the 11th green. We would look down and drop balls in flat spots and everything just kept blowing off the green.

Q. What day was this?

ALEX FITZPATRICK: This was last Friday.

Q. Friday before coming in here?

ALEX FITZPATRICK: Yes.

Q. Who did you play with?

ALEX FITZPATRICK: I just played with Matt.

Q. How has the adjustment been being on this TOUR, figuring out a schedule?

ALEX FITZPATRICK: I would like to say it's gone pretty well. I'm incredibly grateful because have I great people, a great team around me, lots of people that I trust and lots of great advice, especially my brother and the people around him. I feel like coming here for four years for college has really helped me as well and being familiar with the guys out here.

So I don't really feel like it's been hard to kind of fit in. Again, after we played the Zurich, everyone was so welcoming in Miami that it felt right at home. So it's been really nice for me.

Q. You've been asked this before over the last month or so, but how nice is it to have played so well since Zurich for anyone whispering that Matt got you a card?

ALEX FITZPATRICK: Yeah, it's really rewarding. I guess that was always the thing after we won, it was, like, how is he going to do, is he going to carry on playing okay. I think that the biggest thing I took really was the win in India. I felt like that was a big weight off my shoulders. That was kind of something that I had wanted since I was young, to win on that TOUR, and I felt like that made it a little easier going into the Zurich not having as much pressure and just trying to enjoy it.

But it's definitely been really rewarding playing some good golf following that and, yeah, hopefully, that stays like that.

Q. Just for grins, what time is your flight supposed to leave for Turkey after New Orleans?

ALEX FITZPATRICK: I think it was like 9 p.m. so I was --

Q. That had to be the greatest cancellation ever.

ALEX FITZPATRICK: It was amazing, yeah, I can't lie. It's a shame, the Turkish Airlines event is amazing. I loved it last year. It's a great place. I love going back there. But, yeah, I was in Miami, so I wasn't going to swap.

Q. Where are you basing yourself now?

ALEX FITZPATRICK: I'm going to move to Palm Beach, that's my plan. Try and be close to my brother. I'm a member at the Dye Preserve and I am really familiar with the area, I love it there. So, yeah, trying to get out of Matt's hair.

Q. What are you doing now? Staying with him?

ALEX FITZPATRICK: I still have a suitcase. So, yeah, I had two weeks off a couple weeks ago, I went over, I went to New York for three days just to see it, just to spend time there. Just as a bit of a chill out. Then my brother was in New Jersey, so I went over to see him. So I kind of looked at a few places when I spent a couple days in Florida, but didn't have enough time to find anywhere.
