Quick Quotes
Q. How would you characterize the day and how everything shook out?
SAM BURNS: Yeah, I honestly feel like I played a really good round of golf. Unfortunate there on 17. I should have hit a better tee shot, but to kind of have that lie was difficult. I thought I made the putt on 17, but you can't rely on making a 40-footer for par. But overall, I think I played a really good round of golf and unfortunately just got beat.
Q. Talk me through that second shot there on 17 and the thought process through everything.
SAM BURNS: Yeah, we had 178 and I thought I could get enough on it to get it kind of on the back left part of the green. We were trying to get it anywhere past and left of the hole and caught it a little bit high on the face and came up short there. But that was the thought.
Q. Obviously the course played really tough this week. The U.S. Open is coming up in a little over a week. Where do you feel like your game is and how happy are you with the way you played this week?
SAM BURNS: Yeah, it feels great. I had a couple weeks at home of rest. That was great. To come in this week and put four good rounds together and try to get some momentum going the last half of the season. But look, I think if you had asked me if I thought I had a chance on Monday coming down the stretch, I would have certainly said yes. So I think just take away the positives this week and try to build on that.
Q. Obviously, some poor luck early in the day hitting the tree twice. Have you ever had that happen before?
SAM BURNS: No, I guess I need to go cut that tree down. It wasn't very good to me. (Laughing).
Q. Obviously you turned things around and came around. Something like that can kind of mess with you a little bit, right?
SAM BURNS: Well, I think, honestly, this golf course is too difficult to get frustrated. It doesn't do you any good. So, yeah, just try to brush it off and move on and focus on the next shot. But, yeah, it was unfortunate, but I'm the one that did it, so...
Q. I saw your second shot. I didn't see where it landed. Did it land on the path?
SAM BURNS: On 17? I'm not sure. I couldn't tell. I couldn't see it from where I was.
Q. When you went down there, it was just sitting --
SAM BURNS: I would imagine it didn't land on it. I would imagine it probably, like, landed kind of right over it and then kind of came back.
Q. (No Microphone.)
SAM BURNS: It's honestly not terrible. I was just so far below the surface of the green that it was just -- couldn't get enough height on it to really stop it.
