THE MODERATOR: Questions in French.
Q. (Off microphone.)
UGO HUMBERT: It actually was three years since Manna and I were at the French Open.
Q. Well done. Congratulations. For the first round I would imagine that this was perfect for you. How did you feel in your game, plus bearing in mind the hot conditions make it impossible for you to play quicker?
UGO HUMBERT: It was really hot today, but I felt rather well on the court, but the heat will make things a little harder for you at certain stages, because it might make you play slower at certain times.
I played against Manna three years ago on the court in the French Open, and he's so tall that that will make things a little tricky for you, but it was hot. It made things quicker, and I was able to serve really well today.
I'm very satisfied with my match.
Q. This was an all-French match, and your next game is going to be all French again. How special does it make it for you at the French Open, because that means that the audience might react differently? Did you feel any of that today?
UGO HUMBERT: I did not actually know that I was playing Quentin for the next match, so that's funny. Yes, it's quite impressive, because the audience is really shared between the two players, but then the idea is always to play your best tennis and do your best to win the match.
But the atmosphere was really great, and I felt that the audience was supporting the both of us equally.
Q. Even in indoor courts we can see you playing with a cap, but here it was 40 degrees, and you were not wearing a cap. Why?
UGO HUMBERT: Well, I just decided to play without a cap. I felt that that was the best option for me. Maybe it was a little too hot for me to play without any, but I felt good without a cap.
Q. A question on the heat. Do you adapt your training routine or your habits when the temperatures rise so much?
UGO HUMBERT: That's a good question. I've had a nutritionist in my team for a number of years. Given the heat, we had to adapt things accordingly.
You need to make sure that you're hydrated and not much more to add when you are physically prepared and when your nutrition is right, you can handle the heat okay. And today I felt good. Even after those two hours, I felt good.
I never felt particularly tired, because sometimes it can really weigh down your game, and it was quite humid today, but it was not an issue at all with this match.
Q. In the same vein, can you perhaps compare the heat at the French Open with the heat in other Grand Slams? For example, in Australia very often it's very humid and very hot. If you were to compare the heat between those Grand Slams, what would you say?
UGO HUMBERT: I would say the U.S. is the most extreme conditions. In New York I remember playing a game where it was 40 degrees with a rate of humidity that was through the roof. It felt like an oven in there. Maybe it was even dangerous for us.
In these conditions that were extreme, I did not feel good at all there and then, but it's a part of the game I guess, although perhaps we might need to implement new rules to try and do something about it. I am not sure.
But, you know, in Australia things can be rather different. I remember getting in Australia and playing in 17 degree temperatures. Then the day after it might be 30 degrees. So you need to adapt and adjust.
But, of course, these weather conditions were more than welcome here in Paris, because the sun is out, so we cannot complain about that.
Q. I believe that you have not clocked up any win at a Grand Slam since last year. So how does it feel for you?
UGO HUMBERT: I didn't actually know, so it feels great. It feels great to be winning a match at a Grand Slam.
These are the kinds of tournaments where you want to be in top shape, and for the past couple of weeks I've felt that I've been quite consistent with my game and on top.
So I'm very happy with my prep and with how I've gotten things started in this tournament.
