E. JACQUEMOT/L. Fruhvirtova
6-4, 6-3
THE MODERATOR: Elsa, could you please tell us how did you feel out there, and how was your level of game, and how happy are you with your performance?
ELSA JACQUEMOT: Yeah, I'm very happy, because it's not easy to play here in the house. So I'm very happy to win this match. It's not easy, so I'm very happy.
THE MODERATOR: Questions in French.
Q. After the hard month you've had since the start of season, I can imagine that this win is quite enjoyable. Is it something you can build on, because you had a great attitude on the court?
ELSA JACQUEMOT: Thank you. Building on those games, I don't know, because we know we're part of a sport with more losses than wins, but it was nice to win in France again. I had a great game, because in the second set she was trying to play better, but I fought until the end. The crowd was behind me.
So yes, to answer your question, I'm really happy because I'm training very hard both from a physical and mental standpoint for that, so it is really enjoyable.
Q. Is it a good start of your collaboration with Patrick?
ELSA JACQUEMOT: Yes, exactly.
Q. How do you prepare for playing against world No. 1?
ELSA JACQUEMOT: Well, how do you prepare? Well, on paper she's much better than me. She's an inspiration. She's had a great journey in tennis, but as I was saying earlier, she's human. She's a tennis player. I'm part of this sport because I want to be able to face players like her, which is what gives the most emotions.
Even though I'm the underdog on paper, I will give it my best, and I will be happy to play against her.
Q. Since the French Open last year, you've won five first rounds in a Grand Slam. Do you think this shows that you found a form of stability?
ELSA JACQUEMOT: Yes. When playing Grand Slam, I feel comfortable. I feel that I belong in those tournaments. It's not that easy to have a first Grand Slam game. I still have lots of work to do, but seeing that I'm doing well on the courts is quite nice, and I will be happy to play against Sabalenka.
Q. Can you tell us what mental resources you had to use? It was very warm. What did you use in particular?
ELSA JACQUEMOT: The key is keeping believing. It was hot for everyone. I knew that I was not the only one suffering from the heat, and I'm sure that I was really helped by the crowd. I really love being supported by the crowd. We were in France. I'm French. So it's really nice to play in such conditions.
So the crowd has helped a great deal, that's for sure. I actually cheered at myself as well saying, Go, Elsa, go, Elsa, and I've given it my best.
The third set would have been difficult, so I was happy to win in two to save some energy.
Q. Waiting for Diane Parry's results. You are the only French player in the second round. Do you have an opinion on this?
ELSA JACQUEMOT: It's actually quite harsh, because I would have loved for other French players to win as well, but as I was saying, it is difficult to win games. We are part of big tournaments with very good players, so it's difficult for French players, and it's a bit sad.
It doesn't mean that that player is bad, but we have very strong opponents. We are part of big tournaments. Unfortunately, some French players have lost, that's true, but there are a lot of other tournaments, and they will have better results in the next ones.
I would have loved for everyone to win, of course.
Q. Elsa, let me circle back to the crowd and the way they supported you. During your game, someone in the crowd was giving you advice, behaving as though they were your coach, do this and that. Is this something you hear when you are playing? If you hear that, can it be a bit of a disturbance?
ELSA JACQUEMOT: No, I don't hear everything, but some things I do hear. Has it disturbed me? No, and I can tell that they really want to help, so that's nice in a way.
But they're giving me advice, and they don't know me. So I'm actually quite moved, and it's nice.
Q. Is it possible that in a close future you will suffer from the heat? In five sets there could be female tennis in best-of-five.
ELSA JACQUEMOT: I don't know what to say, because we're already suffering from the heat, cramps, and everything. So best-of-three is probably the best option.
Q. In stand 2 you have people that you have identified that have supported you on side courts as well. They are supporting you, helping, chanting, and everything. Do you like it?
ELSA JACQUEMOT: I think it's nice of them, because they're traveling to the US Open, to the Australian Open, and to Wimbledon as well, I think. Just as far as I'm concerned, and probably it's the same for the other players, there can be an impact from outside factors.
You're not feeling the best. You have your team, your coach helping, but having a stand number 2 helping us and pushing us, supporting us, I think it can make a difference on a game.
I like it, and I'm really happy when they're there with us to support us. I think what they implement for us is absolutely great.
