Press Conference
J. TEICHMANN/K. Muchova
6-1, 7-5
THE MODERATOR: Jil, congratulations. How happy are you? You haven't been in this stage of this tournament for, I think, four years. So how satisfied are you for reaching this point, especially after coming back from injury?
JIL TEICHMANN: Yeah, I'm very happy, not only with today's win, just how the whole week is going so far.
It's been, yeah, very emotional. I have enjoyed a lot, especially playing on Lenglen with my little fan club (smiling). Very happy to get through.
THE MODERATOR: Questions in English.
Q. We heard about the four years ago, the result you had here, and I was looking at the results that year. You were having a lot of results on that clay court season. Could you fill in the time in between then to now, just to give us an idea of what happened? You were doing really well, you were down to 170 of the world, but here you are in the last 16.
JIL TEICHMANN: Yeah, I mean, it's tough to sum up four years. I will try to do that a little bit.
Yeah, I was having a very good season. A lot of things changed since then. Firstly, I was, like, 23, 24. Now I'm 28. In between, yeah, different things happen. I struggled a bit with my body, then with my mind. It's a very intense job, I would say.
I have been doing that since I'm 14 nonstop. Until that moment, I was very, very lucky with my body, just having a few, like, four to six weeks' injuries that, yeah, it's a very positive thing so I could be playing the whole time.
But at the same time, yeah, in every career, things happen on court, off court. Changes with quite a lot of my team, as well as in my personal life things happened.
So at some point things get together and it kind of gets too much. So, yeah, decided last September to take a little break, even though I was, like, top 100. I just needed it, because, you know, I do enjoy tennis a lot. I really do like it.
But I was feeling that I was getting down a road that was not healthy anymore. For me, it was like -- as well, with my team, everyone was on board with that. It's just if I wanted to keep playing, I don't know if you say in English, but prolong your career, I needed to take a little break and start again and start from the base.
It's basically what I did since January. I'm working very hard with my team. Started from zero, took my time as well building up.
Yeah, here I am (smiling). I think I summed up quite what I could. Thank you.
Q. It seems like you're really enjoying yourself right now, even during some tense moments today, engaging with the fans. How much are you enjoying the game right now?
JIL TEICHMANN: Very much. I mean, I'm this kind of player a little bit, very emotional. I do enjoy playing in a stadium, playing with a crowd, talking. I just need that. It's kind of a little bit the player I am, as well.
That's why I play tennis, you know, to be in the big stage, to be playing these big moments and, as well, yeah, having a lot of support from all my friends. You know, I'm in Paris, so it's very easy to travel to for the whole Swiss part, as well.
Yeah, just enjoying a lot.
Q. Specific to today, after winning the first set, you were down, I believe 5-1 and came back and won. I'm curious what went wrong and then what went right?
JIL TEICHMANN: You know, I was 5-1 down, but I had so many game chances, as well. It could be probably 4-3 for me or even 5-2. You can turn around whatever.
I think she took a medical time out at 5-2. I went to my team, and when I was talking with my coach, I was, like, okay, I'm serving at 5-2, I'm going to make it tough. Let's see if she serves it out. And then, 5-4, new balls. I'm like, Okay, let's play.
Even if I go to a third set, it's not a disaster for second set. Even though she took the games, I wasn't feeling like she was overplaying me or anything. Yeah, was just going with my game plan, and yeah, basically I turned it around.
I was not thinking, oh, wow, I'm going to turn it around like that, to win six games in a row. I was just going point by point, being in the present. It worked out very well.
Q. On the break that you took, I'm wondering, was that a total break from the sport?
JIL TEICHMANN: Yeah.
Q. You didn't touch a tennis racquet? What did you do instead?
JIL TEICHMANN: Oh, many things. It was a nice break. I needed the break. Again, it was not, like, oh, I took the decision and everything was easy. At the beginning, it was a bit of back and forth of, oh, do I need that, or the tennis side, but you're top 100. The classic.
But deep down when I was, like, really just listening to my heart, it was, like, okay, that's what I do need. I mean, I did travel. I just took time, basically. I went to Switzerland, I took time with my family, I went skiing, I went surfing, I went to watch, like, to visit my friend that lives in Berlin, a childhood friend.
I went as well in my break now to -- because basically my whole team is Argentinian, and in February, it's summer there, so I went there to do my, like, little preseason there, as well.
Yeah, as can you see, I did travel, I took time, and especially I took time to see my friends, my family, and yeah, fill my batteries.
Q. You mentioned your fan club. Who are they? They're your friends?
JIL TEICHMANN: Yeah, I mean...
Q. Did you know that they would be as loud?
JIL TEICHMANN: Yeah, yeah. I mean, the whole week they have been. I've played on smaller courts. They have been here. Basically it's my brother (smiling), and as well, I have a lot of friends from Switzerland that flew in this morning or took the train. As well some Argentinian friends. Some are my brother's friends. Yeah, just a lot of close people that, yeah, came here to support.
I'm shaking right now because it's so cold. I'm trying to speak, but...
Q. Next round you're going to meet another top 10.
JIL TEICHMANN: Okay.
Q. Andreeva. How do you feel, and how are you going to prepare? Do you know how she plays?
JIL TEICHMANN: I mean, I'm just gonna prepare the usual. Top-10 player, great player. I'm going to watch my videos and study her a little bit.
I haven't seen much of her since I was, like, taking a break and she was coming up. So, yeah, obviously it's going to be a tough match. She has three matches played, myself as well. So it's going to be an interesting matchup, for sure. I'm ready, I'm here to play, so I'm looking forward for it.
