Press Conference
D. PARRY/A. Anisimova
6-3, 4-6, 7-6
THE MODERATOR: Amanda, tough match today. Can you summarize your thoughts on your performance?
AMANDA ANISIMOVA: Yeah, it was a really tough one today. I thought I did my best to fight and stay in the match despite the way I was playing at times, but credit to her. I thought she played very well. Yeah, it's a tough one for me for sure, but congrats to her and good luck for the rest of the tournament.
THE MODERATOR: Questions.
Q. Just curious, what was your perspective on just kind of what happened on the tiebreak?
AMANDA ANISIMOVA: I thought from the beginning it was really tough for me, because it was really hot, and I'm not feeling my best physically. Didn't train yesterday, so I was dealing with something. Yeah, for me it was really hard out there.
I tried to do my best until the last moment, but I feel like it just was getting worse and worse for me through the match. A lot of mistakes.
It was just really disappointing for me, but I get it. At the same time, she was playing well, she stayed calm, and she did all the right things. All can I really do is accept that that's the way it was.
Then also in the end I got, like, a bunch of blisters on my hand, so it was really hard for me to hold the racquet and hit the ball. So just really unfortunate day, yeah.
Q. It looks the heat conditions are really getting to the top. What do you remember was the hottest time ever, because more than today it's really difficult to imagine? You were nearly closing your eyes because the light or maybe you were not feeling well. It was very, very extreme, and many shots you missed that it seems like you were not really healthy.
AMANDA ANISIMOVA: Well, I just said that I wasn't feeling well physically, to answer his question, and that I didn't train yesterday because of that. Also, I didn't play in these conditions in my other matches, so from when I stepped outside, it was, like, wow, yeah, it's really hot at this time of the day.
Normally I'm able to handle it pretty well because I'm used to it, but when you're sick, it makes it really challenging for sure. It's really tough. I feel like the mind and body is just not connected.
It was really hard for me to focus even when I'm trying my best, with my best effort, to put the ball in play like I would normally do, but sometimes it just doesn't work that way, I think, when you're under the weather. It's just unfortunate, but nothing I can really do. Most important is that I tried my best. I did everything I could.
Q. How did the rest of your body hold up this week after not playing for two months? I imagine it's a pretty big challenge to find your form in just a couple of hours of match tennis. What's your assessment of whether it's the wrist and everything else holding up?
AMANDA ANISIMOVA: Yeah, I mean, apart from this, not bad, actually. I feel okay physically. Kind of hard to assess. I feel like I, even considering everything, I could have played better, so pretty disappointed. I probably just need to figure some things out for what to do differently next time.
Yeah, my wrist feels not so bad after a few matches, so that's a positive for sure.
Q. What bothered you the most in your opponent's game today, and were you a bit surprised by the level she showed?
AMANDA ANISIMOVA: No, not surprised. I mean, she's a good player, obviously. She deserves to be where she is, but yeah, I've never played her before. I think just very heavy conditions. I think the way she was playing the ball was kind of flying and going up, which was uncomfortable.
But I was sort of expecting that from her. I mean, I watched her play, so it was nothing that surprised me today. So I think I was ready for the game style she was going to come out with, but I think, yeah, it just made it difficult for me.
Yeah, respect for her for the way she's playing.
Q. How was it out there with the crowd so much in favor of your opponent? I'm sure it's nothing new, but how did you find it today?
AMANDA ANISIMOVA: Yeah, it was not a big deal for me. I mean, I'm used to it. It honestly doesn't bother me. If anything, it's a good atmosphere to play in.
Yeah, I mean, I feel like I've had a lot of matches like that, and it really wasn't something that was in my way or affected me.
Q. Just considering you're sick and you had an issue with your wrist, I know it's perhaps a bit early to tell, but do you think it was the right decision to come and play in Paris rather than switching directly to grass, or do you have any regret about it?
AMANDA ANISIMOVA: No. I mean, making the, what, third round, I don't even know, not a bad result. Of course, if I'm healthy enough, I want to play, so I don't have any regrets at all.
Yeah, it's a privilege to play in the French Open. So, yeah, I'm happy with what I was able to get out of it and just learn, learn my lessons. So, yeah, and then hopefully the grass season is better for me.
