F. TIAFOE/J. Faria
4-6, 6-7, 7-6, 6-1, 6-2
FRANCES TIAFOE: Unbelievable getting through. Second time in my career I've came back from two sets to love down. Definitely probably biggest time I'll ever do, considering, right? Obvious why I say that.
Couldn't be happier, man. Couldn't be happier. Yeah, it's a test for all the technical work I've put in. You know, I go back to the moments like that. I'm happy it paid off.
Q. All four of the matches today, your quarter went five.
FRANCES TIAFOE: As they should.
Q. A bunch of tiebreaks, too. With this atmosphere, people are feeling it. Battles are just that much more intense right now.
FRANCES TIAFOE: 100%, 100%. I came out tight as hell today. God. It's the reality, man. It's fun to be a part of, man. I was telling some of my homies, it's fun to be a part of, man. You're a part of history, however you want to look at it, right. Whether you get it done or not, you're part of history, and it's fun to be a part of. And obviously it's always fun to be a part of history.
But yeah, man, it's pretty cool to see guys really put it on the line, everybody. Absolutely just give it all you got. That's the best thing about sports, right? See two guys go absolutely at it and see what happens.
Q. You don't always see that in the same way.
FRANCES TIAFOE: You don't always see that. You see guy's not really believing, the guy's gonna go away. Saw a little bit of that tonight from the other guy.
Yeah, man, it's pretty cool.
Q. What does that say about you that you were able to tough it out?
FRANCES TIAFOE: (Indiscernible.)
Nah, man. Just being tough. Trying to have the mentality, just never laying down. Don't lay down. If he gets you and he earns it, great, but just don't lay down, don't help him over the finish line. And that's kind of my mentality.
Played a great game there, 4-3 in the third, and I just wanted to be super tough and see if he can put me away, and he couldn't.
Q. (Question about time of play for Arnaldi.) He has to play you. What do you think? Do you remember when you played him at Wimbledon and Madrid?
FRANCES TIAFOE: Yeah. Wimbledon was funny, because I was coming from injury. I was able to squeak that one out, he played well against me in Madrid.
Look, man, it's a totally different match. Playing fourth round of a major where, you know, obviously just coming from an absolute battle. Again, we're both going to give it all we got and see what happens.
Q. Can I ask you about the other American guy who made the fourth round? Zach Svajda. He was saying that you were hyping him up when he came off court.
FRANCES TIAFOE: 100%, man.
Q. What do you make of him? For a minute there, it looked like he might be the only American man left until you pulled it back.
FRANCES TIAFOE: 100%. Yeah, it definitely looked like that. I just want to say a big shoutout to Zach Svajda, man. That guy's had a crazy story in his own respect.
Obviously I thought he was going to be at this level much sooner, but he had a lot of things going on. It's great to see him kind of tapping into his potential.
He went through some emotional stuff. Obviously, passing of his dad. Today was his dad's birthday's. Got it done. A great player, great person. Francisco Cerundolo, so that's not easy. Getting it done in five, too. Clay is not even Zach's surface.
That's massive, man. I seen him emotional. I was, like, Bro, that lifted the hairs on my arms, honestly. Super happy with him.
Q. What happened in the argument there early in the fifth set?
FRANCES TIAFOE: Nothing.
Q. From a mental perspective, if seems that whoever will make it here is going to be more mental than anything else. Wondering what kind of mental work do you think you need to do to keep doing what you're doing and not worry about the opportunity?
FRANCES TIAFOE: Stay in the moment.
Q. Is that easy for you?
FRANCES TIAFOE: About to find out (laughter).
That's it.
