Press Conference
THE MODERATOR: Let's welcome the team champions of LIV Golf AndalucĂa Legion XIII. Joining us are captain Jon Rahm, this week's individual champion Tyrrell Hatton, Tom McKibbin, and Caleb Surratt. Congratulations, guys.
Tyrrell, I'll start with you. Congratulations on the individual win this week. You finish at 11-under par and your first individual LIV Golf title in almost two years. There was loads of pressure on you this afternoon, your captain making the charge and closing the gap at one point. What does it mean to get the job done for you here this week?
TYRRELL HATTON: Yeah, it's extremely special to win here. I hadn't won individually for 18 months, and that was definitely on my mind. I'm really happy that I've managed to do it round a golf course as tricky as this.
Jon said to me before he went out today that he was going to make it stressful for me, and unfortunately, he did in the end. Yeah, it was a tricky day. I feel like I hit a lot of good shots on the front nine that didn't really get rewarded. The wind certainly made my life very stressful, and I'm sure every player today felt the same way.
Very happy with the back nine in the end, and that finish was great. Yeah, it's a huge honor to win at this special place.
THE MODERATOR: Jon, a solo second finish this week and another charge for you at Valderrama, keeping the pressure on Tyrrell throughout the day. Can you talk us through your round today and your thoughts on the week overall?
JON RAHM: Played a great round of golf. I needed a hot start, and even though I missed the short putt on 1 and a couple of really good options, still gave myself a really good chance. I got within one early on. Then it kind of stalled.
A little unlucky on 9, and between the eagle on 4 until 15, I wasn't able to make a birdie. I had plenty of chances, and they just didn't go in. So that's obviously where I lost some pace. Having the putts and just not making them was difficult. Not the easiest golf course, but it is what it is.
It was a great week. It's easy to find one or two shots today or throughout the whole week, but clearly that first day, that 2-over par is what made the difference, right?
Still, Tyrrell played incredible golf all week. He's a truly deserving champion. There's very few people I feel like I'll be happy for losing to, and he is one of them. The other four have a Spanish passport otherwise. It wouldn't be as enjoyable as this moment is right now because he deserves it.
THE MODERATOR: Caleb, whilst you weren't in contention individually this week, as we know, in the team competition every shot counts. You joked a moment ago that you did nothing all week, but how important was it for you to stay engaged, stay present, and post the score and ultimately play your part in the team's win?
CALEB SURRATT: Yeah, I mean -- yeah, I don't know. I don't really know what to say. It wasn't my best week. I was just trying to fight for some good momentum going into the next event. Yeah, I was fortunate to have three awesome teammates this week that played really, really solid all week.
Couldn't be more happy for Tyrrell. Yeah, it was a pretty great day.
THE MODERATOR: Tom, Legion XIII now has back-to-back team wins here at Valderrama. You started the day eight shots back of 4Aces, ultimately winning by seven shots, obviously a great turnaround for you guys. How important do you feel this result could prove to be as the team championship race develops over the next few events this season?
TOM McKIBBIN: Yeah, I think the leaderboard can move very quickly. At times we were well ahead, then we were behind, then we were ahead again. I think sort of to get the team win was nice. Hopefully kick on from here.
I think this season has been a little bit frustrating for everybody. We've managed to have a lot of podium finishes, but not as many wins as we'd like. Nice to get back on that top step.
Q. Tyrrell, when your daughter gets old enough to understand, how much will you enjoy telling the story of winning in your first start as a dad?
TYRRELL HATTON: I kind of said to Emily, like one of my motivations probably moving forward is when Althea grows up, she will know that I was pretty good at golf sometimes, and I would love to continue to be able to win tournaments when she's old enough to remember that happening.
Yeah, it's definitely given me a different kind of motivation with practice and what I hope to achieve in golf before obviously I get older and my best years are behind me.
It's allowed me fairly deep thinking there, but those are the thought processes I've had.
Q. You've now won at St Andrews, Wentworth, and now Valderrama, three iconic courses in Europe. It probably puts you in elite company. How do you process that?
TYRRELL HATTON: Well, throw Bay Hill in there as well. That's a pretty nice one too (laughter).
I've been very lucky to win at some very special places. It's very hard to win. Yeah, this one means a lot.
Q. Jon, I can't imagine, there's probably a swirl of emotions because I know how much you want to win here at Valderrama. What is kind of going through your mind in terms of how you process a team win, a friend win, a runner-up here?
JON RAHM: As far as second places go, finishing second in Spain stings just a little bit more. It's two years in a row where I'm going on this stretch with a chance and come up a little bit short. So it hurts a little bit more.
It's such an iconic golf course in Spanish history that I would definitely like to etch my name to it. Every morning my parents go to the members cafeteria, and I've met them for a little bit and I get reminded, they have pictures of the champions, and like we want your picture up next. To know that I have a chance and now I'm going to have to wait a little bit longer, it hurts.
But it was a golf course where it was a love-hate relationship early on. I didn't play great. I didn't know how to play it. I got frustrated because I couldn't hit driver every way. Once I learned how to play it, I love it more and more every single day. There's very few golf courses that can compare to the atmosphere that Valderrama creates. There are very few golf courses that are fit for competition more than Valderrama.
I think, when you win here, you truly are by far the best player in every single aspect of your game. You can't hide behind an easier setup or easier greens or wider. Like everything in your bag needs to be on for you to win here. There's no excuses. That's what I think makes it so special, the champion here is a true worthy champion.
I'm happy obviously for the team. I'm happy we're able to defend the title. I'm not sure why we do well here or a place like Mexico City, but they do have similarities. Ball striking is all our strengths, and I think, give us a tree lined golf course with some wind, we're going to defend ourselves pretty well.
But to watch Tyrrell win after just becoming a dad, I couldn't be happier for him. Again, if I'm going to finish second to somebody like him, it really doesn't bother me at all.
Q. Tom, I wanted to ask you about your final stretch. You had three birdies that proved to be fairly critical. How much were you knowing that the team competition was still pretty tight still at that time?
TOM McKIBBIN: I knew it was pretty tight playing the 4th hole, so I only had four or five holes left, and I think we were tied. I was just trying to finish strong sort of individually as well. Yeah, sort of been a frustrating week and couldn't really get much going, but I knew there was a few chances on the last couple of holes. So it was sort of nice to take advantage of those and see the rest of the guys making birdies too, which made the lead a little bit larger.
Q. Caleb, does the team concept come into play? Like after that stretch where you had the triple and a couple of bogeys sandwiched, you could have easily turned it in at that point, but because of the team element, that's kind of a big difference out here?
CALEB SURRATT: Yeah, for sure, definitely. I mean, it kept me going. It's kind of an interesting one, right? I was playing really, really well, thinking about like still going out and getting a respectable finish, and then that stretch kind of hit. Then like trying to find the positive after that was like looking up on the leaderboard seeing that the other three guys were playing so well.
I just really didn't want to let them down as much as I felt like I have been this week. Yeah, it definitely kept me going. Didn't execute how I wanted to down the stretch, but yeah, I never give up. That's just something that's not in me. I was very fortunate it worked out this week.
THE MODERATOR: We'll switch to Spanish questions with Jon, so Tyrrell, Tom, Caleb, thank you very much.
