Flash Interview

Q. Please welcome to the interview area Jennifer Kupcho after a 2-over par 73. Jennifer, why don't you talk about how today's conditions compared to yesterday afternoon.

JENNIFER KUPCHO: I think my caddie watched yesterday morning a little bit and expected it to maybe be a little bit softer this morning. Went out there and it's still pretty firm, very similar, I would say, to yesterday afternoon, and just a little bit less wind than yesterday afternoon.

Overall, I think the golf course is going to just keep getting harder.

Q. I know the grass type is always a hot topic here. Did the dampness in the morning make it play differently for you?

JENNIFER KUPCHO: Not necessarily. I think yesterday I hit it in the rough a few times and drew pretty good lies. Today not so much. So kind of coming into the greens out of the rough wasn't as successful today.

Q. It happens at the U.S. Open, I think. How do you kind of maintain your patience? I know that finish obviously wasn't what you wanted, but you have an opportunity over the weekend to continue to go well and maintain your position. How do you stay patient with yourself?

JENNIFER KUPCHO: I think just realizing this golf course definitely provides a lot of birdies. I think almost after every bogey I've come back and made a birdie.

So just telling myself that really any hole is birdieable. I just need to go out and hit the shots and do the best that I can.

Q. Just curious if you talked to your parents last night and said thank you?

JENNIFER KUPCHO: I did not.

Q. No?

JENNIFER KUPCHO: No, I did not. I think me and my mom kind of have an understanding like just don't text me. I don't want to hear from you if I play good. I don't want to hear from you if I play bad. We'll talk at the end of the tournament.

Yeah, I called her on Monday. So I'll call her probably when I get back to my house on Monday.

Q. I was going to ask if they were allowed to come this weekend, but I think you just answered it.

JENNIFER KUPCHO: I mean, they're welcome to, but I don't think they're going to.

Q. So you have a long time between now and when you tee off tomorrow. How will you spend it?

JENNIFER KUPCHO: Getting some work on my body, kind of get myself prepared. A quick turnaround for my old body nowadays.

Yeah, kind of just relax, maybe do a little bit of gym work.

Q. You said last week that you're trying to have more fun. Are you accomplishing that, do you think?

JENNIFER KUPCHO: Yeah, for sure.

Q. And how?

JENNIFER KUPCHO: I don't know, I think just instead of taking golf as it's just work, maybe just going out and playing. I think just enjoying the aspect of being on the golf course. I wouldn't say I'm always someone that has loved golf. I really wouldn't say that even now. I think it's just something I do, and it doesn't define me.

I think I just had to accept that and just go out and play and have the most fun that I can with the people that I'm with.

Q. Another player told me that earlier in the year -- it was Lydia -- that she didn't love golf. I said, well, what is it that drives you to do what you've done? I want to ask you, if you don't love the game, what do you love about what you do?

JENNIFER KUPCHO: I'm a competitive person literally in everything that I do. I play FIFA on my off weeks. I'm competitive. I play board games or card games with my family, like it gets hostile sometimes. Like I'm competitive.

So I think like being out here I'm just a very competitive person. That's what drives me to be good.

Q. I know you won't talk to your parents, but your husband obviously caddies for Allisen Corpuz. Will you talk to him about your round for the last couple of days?

JENNIFER KUPCHO: No. Honestly, Jay and I don't talk about golf. We get back, and we don't talk golf. I think that's one thing that's been really good about our relationship. Yeah, we both enjoy golf and we do it on our off weeks and this and that, but in tournaments he knows I don't want to talk about it, but if I do want to talk about it, I'll talk to him, but he's not going to bring it up to me.
