Press Conference
THE MODERATOR: Let's welcome Tyrrell Hatton from Legion XIII. Well played again today, 2-under par round of 69. You're 6-under par total for the tournament. Can you take us through your round today?
TYRRELL HATTON: Yeah, obviously the front nine was pretty frustrating for me. I feel like I gave myself a fair few opportunities, and obviously putts just weren't dropping.
I hit a couple of loose shots, as well, which is pretty easy to do around here. Just struggling a bit, and then go and make bogey on 10, and 2-over for the day kind of feels like not an ideal way to start your second round.
Yeah, obviously making birdie on 11 and then a really good up-and-down on 12, and then a bonus putt on 13 kind of really got me going momentum-wise. The eagle on 17 was clearly a highlight and definitely a bonus, as well.
Q. You're leading at the halfway stage; it's your first tournament back after a short break. Then you've got the U.S. Open in a couple of weeks. How does it feel to be leading going into the weekend this week and your form heading into Shinnecock Hills in a few weeks?
TYRRELL HATTON: Yeah, certainly if you'd have said to me on Wednesday that I'd have a two-shot lead going into the weekend, I probably wouldn't have believed you, to be honest. As I said yesterday, I feel like I had a good warmup and allowed me to -- I simplified a few things and just kind of went out with that feeling, and I feel like I hit some really good golf shots.
Tried to do the same thing again today. It was a tricky day, so even if you did hit some good shots, it was pretty easy to miss the greens. Yeah, I'm happy with how it feels, and hopefully I can keep going with that this weekend.
Q. How were the conditions today compared to yesterday? Would you say they were just as difficult?
TYRRELL HATTON: Yeah, I felt like the greens were probably just getting a bit firmer, as well, which makes it a bit harder to -- it makes it harder to hit them. It was still pretty breezy. I feel like the wind dropped a little bit there right at the very end.
But yeah, certainly the front nine, it felt really tough. It kind of felt like scoring wasn't going to be overly low. To be honest, it never really is around here anyway. But it kind of feels like it will get firmer and harder from here.
Hopefully can keep hitting good golf shots.
Q. I wanted to ask you about your history in Spain, playing in Spain. Had you played this course before 2024?
TYRRELL HATTON: No, I hadn't. It was my first time here in 2024. Taken me a while to get around here, so it was always a course that I wanted to play. I've certainly probably lost more hair over the last three years playing it than maybe I would have done if I never had.
It's an iconic venue, and as I said yesterday, it's always good to play.
Q. Did it meet your expectations, what you imagined Valderrama might have been a few years ago?
TYRRELL HATTON: Yes and no. From speaking to a few guys that have played here a lot over many years, they're saying that there's a lot less trees now, which as someone that doesn't really like shaping the golf ball or thinking about shaping the golf ball, I think maybe that helps me a little bit.
But yeah, they were talking about how quirky it was, and you can see that in certain places. Yeah, I think with some of the trees that have come down have made it play maybe a little bit softer.
Q. Jon mentioned before that this golf course may be very good for you because of the way you are playing. Whether you complain a lot or you don't complain at all, you can do very well on this golf course. What do you think about it?
TYRRELL HATTON: Well, I think over the years, my approach play into the greens has generally been a strength, and again, over the years, my putting is normally one of my strengths, too. When you're playing a golf course like this, if you're playing well, they kind of go -- it should work very well around here, but that's a lot easier said than done. There's a lot of factors that go into each shot, and you do need a little bit of luck.
I guess the last two days I've had a little bit of luck, and hopefully that continues this weekend.
