Real Club Valderrama
Fireballs GC
Press Conference
Q. How important do you think Valderrama is to LIV's future because I believe the prestige and difficulty of this course stands out from a lot of other venues on the calendar, and it really tested you guys today, and I think it was a great spectacle to watch.
SERGIO GARCIA: Yes. I mean, you're asking the guy that is going to tell you that I hope we play here every single year. I love this place.
I think that Valderrama obviously has something special. It has so much class. You can kind of consider it the Augusta of Europe.
Obviously it brings a lot of good things to the league. But at the end of the day, also you've got to realize that we need to have a good business plan that hopefully the tournament makes money. Hopefully there's enough people, we're selling enough things to be able to make money in the tournament. If that's the case, then we'll probably continue to come here. If it doesn't, it will be sad.
But we've got to look at where we can have the best business plan for moving forward, and I would love it to be here. But to be totally honest, I don't know.
Q. Is it at times a bit of a love/hate relationship out there because of the wind where you're hitting shots and you think, oh, I flushed it and it went 40 yards less than I thought it was going to go? Does it really test you mentally?
SERGIO GARCIA: Yeah, without a doubt. Obviously for me today on 16 after bogeying 15 where I didn't hit the best tee shot, you get there, you hit a good tee shot on 16, you're thinking, okay, perfect, I have a lot done here. Still not easy.
I stood there thinking, you know, it's probably not going to get to the flag, but hopefully if it lays down and bounces in the middle of the green and rolls up a little bit, it can get close. If not, if I'm somewhere around 20 feet short, it's a good shot. 4 is a good score.
I hit it, and as soon as I hit it, I knew it wasn't going anywhere. It was a massive gust of wind, and I was like hoping that it would get to the green. Didn't even get close to getting to the green. It went so short, even though I hit it really low.
We play outside. I guess you've got to deal with those things. Sometimes it's a little bit easier than others. But I was very happy to see the kind of chip I hit after that and made a good 4 and then obviously made another good 4 on the next and a good 4 on the last to finish, so I was happy with that.
Q. You've got about 70, 80 rounds here in your career. Where does today rank in terms of difficulty? Is it just about average? Is it maybe higher than average? Where do you rank it?
SERGIO GARCIA: It's definitely above average. I have played it more difficult, but I would put it in the top 20, 25 percent of difficulty today. I think it was -- obviously if you play really, really well, you could shoot like a 67, 68 like Tyrrell and Scott did.
But not only did you have to hit a lot of good shots, a lot of things had to go right, with hitting it at the right time, making sure that you guessed the gust the right way.
It's the way it was, I guess.
Q. You mentioned on the broadcast that you expect the course to play a little different tomorrow because of a wind change. Can you just talk about that and how your experience out here will maybe prove to be very beneficial tomorrow in adapting to that difference?
SERGIO GARCIA: Well, I think we've been playing here for three or four years now, so most of the guys have seen the course both ways, with this wind and then with the opposite wind come from the sea.
I think they have a good idea, but that's the beauty about golf; the same course can play so different from one day to the next. There's no other course that brings that -- no other golf that brings that more to see than a links course. Links golf, the courses change so much depending on how the wind blows, and not even a hard wind, just a little bit because there's no trees, there's nothing to block it.
But tomorrow if the wind changes, like they said, it's definitely going to be playing much different, and you have to adjust to that.
Q. Are you still learning about this course, or do you feel like, I pretty much have seen what I'm going to see out here?
SERGIO GARCIA: You still learn. You still learn a little bit here and there. There's always something that you learn about. I've been fortunate enough to play here many, many times.
But there's always something new that happens in every single round.
