Quick Quotes
Q. Joining us after the first rounds the ShopRite LPGA powered by Wakefern is Laetitia Beck. With your birdie on 18, you had your lowest round of your professional career. What was going through your mind out there, chasing your best round or just playing your game?
LAETITIA BECK: Yeah, more maybe chasing a 10-under than my best round. I do think I maybe did shoot 8-under a while ago. No, I wanted to shoot nine being 10-under so that was in my mind, yes.
Q. After a round like this, how do you reset or get ready to go back out there and do the same thing tomorrow?
LAETITIA BECK: Just need to focus on small things, short range sessions, short putting sessions, maybe keep it short.
Just have to stay focused and positive and try to bring my game to the course tomorrow.
Q. You went bogey-free today. We've heard that some of the are holes out there that are playing a little tricky. How did you specifically...
LAETITIA BECK: So I think I hit about 15 greens and I had two really good up and down saves. Even during the pro-am rounds I was able to read the greens pretty well, so I was just able to make a lot of putts, didn't miss too many greens, few up and downs, and it felt easy.
Once you hit a lot of greens you can shoot low, so that's I guess the way I made my -- the higher numbers.
Q. I think you only had 25 putts today. Do you think putting is one of your strengths, or do you this it was just something that was going really well today?
LAETITIA BECK: It was going well today for sure. I think the confidence that I had from the other day during the pro-am, making putts, reading the lines properly, helped me trusting that I could see the line even though the greens might be a little bumpy.
And I've been working on the strokes, and I feel more comfortable than I used to before. Distance control was always descent this year, and the few times that I did like not hit is close I was able to putt it very close to the hole.
Yeah, again, I made a few 15-footers that I usually don't make, so that's why -- it was nice to keep going and keep making birdies.
Q. How did you feel come into the tournament? Like what was the confidence level you had in your game coming into this?
LAETITIA BECK: I was not very confident. I am missing like fairways, and even today that wasn't my strength. But the course is wide enough, and if you're in the rough it's not thick enough, so you're still able to hit it close to the hole.
So, yeah, I do tell myself when I'm struggling a little bit that every day is a new day and I can -- even if last week or yesterday was not great, I can in one day play great.
That showed today, being able to bring that like not great round the past few weeks to like really shoot a low score.
Q. You're in the lead now. Who knows what's going to happen in the afternoon. Might be top of the leaderboard. How do you emotionally handle, that leading after the first round going into tomorrow? How do you handle that?
LAETITIA BECK: Yeah, it doesn't happen too often. I had a couple times in the past, but I just have to focus on the next day. Just not think about what happened yesterday. Start fresh. Just try to hit fairways and greens.
Really for me will be to not think about my score or position and just tomorrow is another day like any other day.
Q. Is that easy or hard to do?
LAETITIA BECK: I think because I've been playing here for now 12 years on Tour on and off, LPGA and Epson, it's getting easier. In the past there was a tournament I was leading on the first day and I was so nervous and shocked because it never happened, like it was my first time.
I think because of the experience I had with Epson, the win, I think it's getting easier. I mean, I'm sure it's not going to be the easiest, but right now I'm just -- yeah, going to try to for get what happened today.
Yeah, obviously, yes, I need to remind myself like you shot well so I can have that confidence, but I'm going to try it forget about the position.
Q. You mentioned you kind of bounced back and forth between here and Epson. What's kept you out here and kept you grinding for -- since 2015? What's kept you going?
LAETITIA BECK: Well, I want to do well. I'm a perfectionist and also representing my country and culture, that means a lot to me. I think that's the biggest motivation for me to want to represent.
And I know I have the game, so I know it's just like a small changes here and there pretty much. It's all confidence and believing in myself. I know if I do have that I can still play good golf.
Q. And last one from me: You played in the Olympics; you've been in big events. Can you draw on that experience going into tomorrow and hopefully Sunday for you?
LAETITIA BECK: Well, Olympics to me always felt like another LPGA event, a smaller shorter field, because we're competing against the same people.
So I would say any event, I can learn from any event, Epson, LPGA; leading on the Epson for the first time last year and winning. So I can learn a little bit from every experience from the past.
Q. What were the conditions like this morning? How was the wind and was the course soft? Greens hard or soft?
LAETITIA BECK: Greens are soft. A little bumpy, so might be hard to make putts sometimes. I would say the course, the conditions are pretty perfect. There is like a little bit of wind, but I would not complain at all for like five or seven miles per hour wind because it can get really windy here.
So I would say it's a beautiful day and it's a day to really go low, especially for a morning tee time.
Q. Earlier you mentioned keeping a positive attitude and momentum. How do you keep the momentum going forward tomorrow?
LAETITIA BECK: I just have to believe in myself, trust. When one day doesn't go well, suddenly we start stressing out. We have to remember it can change. Like our swing doesn't change. It's all in the head.
So it's like just believing that I am capable of playing well even if I'm not feeling great about my swing or hitting it perfectly. Today was a perfect example of that.
So again, just have to believe in myself, trusting. I was a little bit visualizing when I was playing well a week ago with friends and I was hitting perfect shots. When I was on the course I did try to visualize the place and that like specific tee shot on the course where I was like, I hit a perfect shot; I can do it again here; nothing changed.
So it's really having to believe in myself.
Q. For you personally representing your culture is huge. What's it like representing Israel in the LPGA?
LAETITIA BECK: I mean, it was always a big mission of mine since I started playing 2015 on Tour.
So I love it. I love the support that I get especially in New Jersey. It's a big reason why I do what I do.
Q. And what's the Philly area like to you coming here? Philly fans are passionate. Do you see any maybe LPGA fans getting a little more passionate in the Philly areas?
LAETITIA BECK: Wait, say that again.
Q. Philly fans are passionate. Do you see a difference in fans here?
LAETITIA BECK: I mean, I don't do well too often so I don't have that crowd behind me. They're there usually when you do well. So I can't tell what the difference.
Obviously I know the New Yorkers, because I am around New York more, are very passionate. So it is nice to see.
