Press Conference
THE MODERATOR: Let's welcome to the media center Talor Gooch, captain of OKGC. Talor, well played, 7-under 63, currently in the solo lead at 8-under. This course has proven to be quite a test for much of the field, but what did you see out there today that allowed you to go low?
TALOR GOOCH: I hit a lot of shots close and made a bunch of putts. It was one of those days kind of everything was clicking. Made a couple long putts. I played well yesterday, I just didn't get the putter going, so it was good to get the putter going. These greens are tricky. It's hard to make putts out here at times. Made a couple long ones and hit a couple close down the stretch, which was nice.
Q. Heading into this event, were you familiar with this venue, this course at all, and how has it through two rounds stood up to expectations?
TALOR GOOCH: Yeah, not familiar at all. It's super impressive how firm it is after the rain that we had earlier in the week, so yeah, it's in good shape. It's a good test. The wind is kind of tricky out there. It kind of flips and swirls. It's kind of a shot maker's course. I was saying earlier it's a testament to how great of a golfer Bryson is to be able to play bomber's paradises and then this course is a little bit more of a shot maker's course. Yeah, it's a fun course, and it's just another example that a course doesn't have to be 8,000 yards to be a good test.
Q. You spoke earlier this week about the value of team golf and what they believe in the potential future there. As someone who has experience not only in this league but as an investor in other sports, what's the value and potential that you see in team golf, and especially with LIV?
TALOR GOOCH: Yeah, first of all, you see it all over the world with LIV, right? You see it in all these places that we go. You see it in the States, South Africa, Australia, UK, here. You see it everywhere, the excitement that the fans have to root for their team. It's awesome. It's what makes sports great.
You see it in other sports. As you alluded to, we have a bull riding team. You see at the home event of each team how excited they get when they team wins a game.
Yeah, team sports are the best in the world, and so for us to be able to highlight what team golf is is awesome.
Q. You started the season with four top 20s, and it's obviously tailed off a little bit since. What did you think about your form coming into this week?
TALOR GOOCH: Yeah, the beginning of the year, I played a bunch of good golf. I just couldn't really connect and kind of get the weeks going.
Frustrating to start the year off well and not show a whole lot for it. Then had a couple tough weeks in Mexico and D.C., and so been working hard. The game still doesn't feel great, but we're working hard, and we're working in the right direction, so hopefully after a day like today -- even final round in D.C. or Trump Virginia, I can't remember what I shot, but I had a really good final round even though he finished 40th or whatever. Had a really good round, and I think it's an example of why not quitting is so important. It's an example of why team golf is so important. I could have on Sunday in Virginia, I could have just shipped it and not cared, but I still want our team -- us finishing one spot better is important to me.
Had a good Sunday there and then a good day yesterday and good day today. Hopefully we can just kind of keep it going and get this train rolling.
Q. You're supposed to peak for next week; that's your course.
TALOR GOOCH: I wish I could say it's as easy as picking a time to play great because if I could do that, I would just do it all the time.
Q. I did want to ask you about the reception to the team's rebranding. This is obviously the second tournament with the new colors and team name. What's the reception been like?
TALOR GOOCH: Back home it's been great. The last couple weeks after being back home after Virginia was awesome. I feel like I've gotten 100 texts of people asking where to buy gear, where they can get a hat or a polo or whatever.
So it's been great. At the couple courses I play back home, everyone points out what a cool logo it is, how cool the gear looks, how exciting it is, when are we going to get a tournament in Oklahoma, all those things. It's been cool. And I got to play golf with a couple of the Thunder players last week, and they were asking for some gear, too.
Yeah, it's exciting back home, and we're excited to just keep building.
Q. How much did you and Peter talk about Oklahoma State today?
TALOR GOOCH: Not a whole bunch, actually. We were teammates at Oklahoma State, but yeah, we didn't talk about it a whole bunch actually. But the team is good. Won the national championship last year. They're looking strong this year. When you're winning, you don't have to talk about much.
