Q. Bryson, did you start thinking about a really low one after your hot start?
BRYSON DeCHAMBEAU: Yeah, there's no doubt. After I birdied 10 I was thinking to myself, okay, this could be special if I keep it going. I just got cool. I hit a great shot on 13. Just flew a lot longer than I wanted and three-putted consequently. Hit some good shots on the next hole, didn't get rewarded, and then same thing on 15, the par-5, that really derailed me a bit.
But I stuck it back at it on 16 and just kept pushing through, persevered. Made birdie on 16. Two good swings on 17, two okay swings on 18 and just didn't really have anything else happen and just kind of simmered down.
It's always fun when you get going hot because then you think to yourself, could this be another 59, 58 round.
It was still a great round of golf and very happy with the way I played.
Q. Statistically it was one of your best if not your best approach play rounds of your LIV Golf career. How much has that been a priority to you of late?
BRYSON DeCHAMBEAU: Yeah, I'm just trying to get better with my golf swing. I really want to get back to what I was doing at Greenbrier, how comfortable I felt. I feel like I'm super close. Even like at Aronimink, even at the Masters, I just felt like I was knocking at the door one, two weeks before that, or both events before the Masters. I felt like I was right there, so close to playing some Greenbrier golf.
Today was more of keeping it in play, and when I hit bad shots, I still missed it in the right place. Got a little unlucky on the back nine, but all I can say is I feel like I'm getting closer with my irons, which is great.
Q. You spoke very thoughtfully in the press center this week about your belief in the place for team golf in the world of golf. Your team is leading by three, even with a late reserve in Travis Smyth, which you guys are quite used to over the years. How much do you even acknowledge that looking at the scoreboards?
BRYSON DeCHAMBEAU: Well, I wish we could see it more. There was times where I couldn't see the team as much as I would have liked to, and so I didn't know what we were doing. Then I got up here on 18, saw we were leading, and I'm like, I've got to get this up-and-down; I don't just want to have a two-shot lead, I want to have a three-shot lead.
It's huge. I think people underestimate it and I think it's a lot of fun. You see a lot of people with Crushers hats out here, Fireballs or 4Aces. It's a bit underrated and people can say what they want about it but I truly believe in it and I think a lot of us out here do. I really care about the game and where I think it can go.
