Quick Quotes
Q. All right, here with Lilia Vu after her third round at the Kroger Queen City Championship presented by P&G. A ton of scoring opportunities for you today. I know earlier in the week you talked about wanting to be a little more consistent. Didn't really have that yesterday, but back to some consistency today. Just what were some of the differences in the round?
LILIA VU: I think just trusting my body. Everybody knows I've gone through this back issue and lost a lot of confidence in my swing and its ability.
Something clicked yesterday after the range and I decided I'm just going to do it and see what happens. That's the only thought I had all day and it worked out.
I gave myself a lot of opportunities for birdie, and, yeah, it was just a different style of golf today. I was just more free and was able to just focus on playing golf instead of playing defense.
I feel like sometimes like I'm very tentative with my body and I'm like, oh, okay, like this is all I have, this is all I have, instead of just going out there and giving it 100% with not even expecting the result, just doing what I need to do basically.
Q. Are you able to pinpoint what exactly it is that clicked for you? Can you put it into words?
LILIA VU: I've always been a very left-side, left-arm golfer. My entire life I'm like, I can't have a right-arm feel. I just can't do it. Funny enough, my left shoulder/rib is hurting so I can't really think about my left arm.
So I didn't play the weekend last week, so I was able to come here early and I was on the range by myself. I was like, what if I think about the right arm? I'm going to exhaust all options. I'm playing like crap, so let me just try and see if I can switch sides really quick.
And that's was all I did this week, and it seems to be alleviating pressure on my left shoulder, too, and now it's just repeatable. It's the stronger side anyway, so...
Q. Did you do something to the left side that caused that rib to hurt?
LILIA VU: I think it's just always been like -- I think during Covid I practiced a lot. I already had like a left shoulder thing and it kind of went away for a little bit with strengthening stuff. All the back stuff is like left leg, left lower back, left shoulder. It's just left-side dominant. Which is kind of funny, because I always thought it was my dominant side because that's the side that I think about my golf swing, but I switched sides and it's kind of turning out better.
Q. Can you take us through the eagle today at 11?
LILIA VU: Yes. That was crazy because the tee was moved up, but I'm not carrying it too far, so I decided I'm just going to hit towards the cart path on the right. Luckily enough I was able to still be in the first cut.
I knew that was almost a better angle to the left pin because it's kind of like a bowl. I had maybe about seven, eight yards in and then hit my 60. I knew I could land it anywhere left because it kind of just bowls in.
I guess I hit it really well. I didn't see it, but Charley was able to see it and she said it went up on the fringe and then came back and then rolled in.
I was like, I'll take it on this hole.
Q. How are you feeling just being back in this position with all the struggles that you have to just be in the hunt and in the place that you are heading into the final round tomorrow?
LILIA VU: Yeah, I'm really grateful for all the struggles, even though I know it was really, really hard on me. It still is hard on me. I feel like it's something that I just have to climb out of and just keep swimming kind of deal.
But I enjoy the process. I love trying to get better. I said this on Thursday, everybody out here wants to get better, right? So I feel like everybody is getting better really quickly, so I feel like it's time to just amp it up.
That's what I said or what I did on Sunday when I was able to practice. I'm like, if I just switch my feel from left to right, let's see what happens, and it's actually something that I should have done sooner.
Q. I know coach on the bag this week instead of Cole. Has that offered any new perspective out there?
LILIA VU: Yeah, I think -- I mean, my coach is the one that sees my swing the most and knows it the best. When he's telling me, you're swinging it well and putting it well, it gives me extra emphasis and confidence to go into the next hole, next shot, everything.
I think that just kind of alleviates -- and I think it's also nice for him to be on the bag just so he can see what really happens on the course and what my brain is going through.
It will be interesting to talk to him after the tournament and see what he thought about it.
