Quick Quotes
Q. All right, joined by Lilia Vu after her first round at the Kroger Queen City Championship presented by P&G. A little bit of a slow start until about hole 17. Really picked it up. Was there any sort of shift you saw in your game there?
LILIA VU: I think I just started to trust my game a little better. I know this course is tough. It's hard to hit the fairway. Sometimes you just need a little bit of luck to get there.
But I birdied from even the rough, and I think I that gave me some sort of confidence. I hit a really good drive on 17. That's probably one of the hardest holes in my opinion just to hit the fairway. I was maybe just a foot in the rough, hit a good shot to like three feet and then figured, okay, I can birdie from the rough if I need to.
I think that kind of propelled me and gave me some confidence moving into the other nine.
Q. Obviously a new course for us this year. What have you made of Maketewah? I know a lot of players have a lot of varying opinions on it: it's a little quirky, hilly, flat. What have you made of the course?
LILIA VU: I kind of like it. It's so tough to the point that you kind of have to think about the shot in front of you, and that's the style of golf I love the most.
And there is wind here. The fairways can be firm. The rough is thick. Just all different types of shots that you can get, and it's actually kind of fun to navigate around that.
Q. Does to remind you of any other courses you guys usually play?
LILIA VU: It kind of reminds me of Sharon Heights a little bit just because you can hit the fairway and it can tumble into the rough. It's just a matter of a good bounce.
But it's fun, it's tricky, and I think there will be some good golf. And I think also I came into the round thinking that everyone is going to make mistakes and not to be too hard on myself about it, and I think that also helped.
Q. You had some struggles in recent weeks. What do you feel like was the difference today?
LILIA VU: I think I just had a good week of prep like leading into it and knowing that the hard work is going to pay off eventually, and you know, there is times that were way worse than this and I made it out of that.
I'm in a better spot than rock bottom and I'm just enjoying the process of getting better for sure. And I think everyone out here is kind of the same way. If you don't enjoy getting better then you're kind of miserable out here.
Q. Anything specific you focused on with that prep this week that seems to have clicked here?
LILIA VU: I think just one shot at a time. Just knowing the shot in front of me is the most important and 1000 get from point A to point B. That just really helps me.
Q. Last one: What do you take from this round and hopefully build upon heading into the weekend?
LILIA VU: Yeah, I think definitely some confidence. It's been, you know, a tough couple of months. I would have good rounds and then kind of lead up the next day with not a good round.
So I think I'm looking forward to seeing the test that that course puts us through, but I'm excited for it. I feel good about my game. I feel good on the greens.
I have my coach on bag this week, too so that's kind of fun. It's different. But I think it was a good change for a little bit. I'll have Cole back in a couple week. I initially thought that there wasn't an off week before ShopRite so that's why I told Cole, hey, we're not playing. Then I was like, wait a minute. I looked at the calendar. There is. So he kind of made plans. Sorry that he can't be here.
I think he's on a boy's trip.
