Flash Quotes

THE MODERATOR: Shane Lowry is with us now at the PGA. Shane 2-under today. What did you do well out there?

SHANE LOWRY: I think I just managed my way around the course. It got tricky. You know everyone was kind of intrigued to see what the course was going to be like and what it was going to play like. And as you see, it's playing quite difficult. And there's no low scores. 3-under is the best score at the minute.

I felt like you just, WHEN you get out of position, you need to try and get back in position, and you need to take your chances when you got them. I felt like I did a good job of that today.

THE MODERATOR: Perfect. Thanks.

Q. You prepared well this week, you knew what was facing you going into today. The demands on patience in what is a long round, how did you deal with that?

SHANE LOWRY: Yeah, I was a little bit nervy at the start, to be honest. I was, like I struggled, I felt uncomfortable out there for a while. If anything, that kind of focuses me more, and I -- you know, you really just worried about -- you know, not worried, but one shot at a time, and you're really just kind of focusing on the next shot at hand.

I felt like I did a really good job of just staying patient, trying to make birdies when I hit good shots. And if I hit bad shots, just not getting too flustered and just kind of managing my way around the course nicely.

Q. Good to finish with that birdie on the last. What were you hitting in there?

SHANE LOWRY: I hit a 7-iron in and obviously a little bit further right than I would have liked in the air. I don't know where it pitched. There was a pitch mark beside the hole, I don't know if it pitched beside the hole or not, but, yeah, I was pretty happy with that one. That will make dinner taste nice.

Q. The fairways look wide, but obviously some players are saying they're playing a hell of a lot narrower than that because of the slopes on them and the firmness of them. How are you dealing with that?

SHANE LOWRY: Yeah, the wind direction as well is making 'em play kind of really narrow. I hit a couple of decent tee shots, pitching on the fairway at the end that just kind of run into the rough, and when it runs into the first cut you generally get an average enough lie. So, yeah, you just have to take try and hit the best shot you can, pick your targets and take it on the chin wherever it lands.

Q. We know you're a bit of a hole-in-one specialist these days, but the par-3s here --

SHANE LOWRY: I'll take pars out here.

Q. You played them, I know you dropped a couple of shots on a couple of the par-3s, but you played them --

SHANE LOWRY: Yeah, you're standing on the 8th tee and it was -- at the time the wind was like, who knows how far it was playing. But it was just a 7-wood and it was just kind of hit it and hopefully it gets around the green. Because you didn't want to miss it left. Long left was pretty much dead. I hit it in a good spot. I hit an average bunker shot and I missed a putt.

But and then, you know, I just pulled my tee shot into 14.

And then 17 I hit a lovely 7-wood in there.

But yeah, the par-3s are incredibly difficult. They're long around here. So, yeah.

Q. If you were to sum up what you did so well today, how would you sum it up?

SHANE LOWRY: I just think I managed myself around the course very well today. I didn't feel comfortable out there at all, but maybe that, I don't know, maybe that helped me.
