Press Conference
THE MODERATOR: Let's welcome to the Media Center our team champions of MAADEN LIV Golf Virginia, 4Aces GC. Congratulations on another team win. Dustin, start with you. During that weather delay with a few holes left to play, did that give you or the guys a chance to reassess where you were on the leaderboard. Was there any gathering or any team conversations about what was needed?
DUSTIN JOHNSON: No. Literally by the time we got to the clubhouse and walked in, they told us to go back to our hole. So I got back in the cart.
I was playing with AK, but I didn't see either Thomases.
Q. Were you aware of just how tight it was coming down the stretch?
DUSTIN JOHNSON: I was aware when we were headed back out. We had half a hole to finish, and we were tied, I knew that. Then obviously on the way back in, I knew that Fireballs had a one-shot lead. So it was going to be close. Obviously finishing up and we ended up tying.
I knew it was close, but even with a few holes to go, I knew we were pretty close.
Q. AK, incredible round today. On a day when not as many players went really low like yesterday, what was working so well for you out there?
ANTHONY KIM: I just made some putts. It's that simple. I didn't make any putts the first three days. I missed a lot of really short ones, which putting is my strength. So it was very unfortunate and frustrating, but finally got a few to drop. Obviously I'm going to think about the last three days and wonder what could have been.
But it felt great to make them today on Sunday when it counted, and the last one on my last hole to tie it up was a big putt for me.
Q. TD, another impressive finish for you. Your first season with LIV. You've been one of the -- clearly one of the most consistent players out here. In what ways has being part of this team helped your game and your season?
THOMAS DETRY: First of all, it's the environment. I think it's really nice, like we all get along really well. I grew up seeing DJ and AK as well playing golf. I do feel like we feed from each other as well. We're all good players. We're all very competitive. And I just love seeing that 4Aces name on top of the leaderboard.
When we were creeping up, our finish yesterday was really big. We had a big finish yesterday with a couple of birdies to get within three or four, and we came strong off the blocks today, and that's what we needed to do.
It's just fun. I think I'm just having a lot of fun. It's competitive, but it's fun as well at the same time, and I'm playing good golf. So I feel like all the stars are pretty much aligned.
Q. TP, even on a day when you might not be scoring the way you wished to, knowing that the team leaderboard is close and what's at stake there, is there any extra nerves or adrenaline or motivation? What's that like coming down the stretch?
THOMAS PIETERS: It was kind of weird with the weather delay. Go in the clubhouse, have a Celsius, and then go back out. Had a six-footer --
You like that? That was good, wasn't it?
I had a six-footer up the hill for par, and I was like, oh, I'd better not miss this because the boys are making birdies. I had a tough day.
Yeah, every shot counts, and I was trying my best to make a birdie on my last hole but obviously did not make the putt. They did.
Q. DJ, is it a pretty easy decision to send out AK and TD in the playoff?
DUSTIN JOHNSON: Yes, it was a very easy decision. They shot the two best scores today, and I was tired.
(Laughter)
THOMAS DETRY: I was tired too.
DUSTIN JOHNSON: You played well.
Q. DJ, what was it like to see Anthony shoot 10-under today? His best round out here on LIV.
DUSTIN JOHNSON: I played with him, so obviously he played really well. Like you said, he holed some putts. Even the couple times he got out of position, he hit pretty good pitches and holed the putt. That's how you shoot really good scores is you make those six-, seven-footers for par that kind of keep your momentum.
Yeah, he hit a lot of nice shots too, shooting 10-under. But holed some really nice putts for par, which I think sometimes they're bigger than the birdie putts.
It was just a really solid round. It was fun to watch.
Q. AK, how would you compare this round to the final round in Adelaide?
ANTHONY KIM: I don't think, no matter what I do in golf, anything is going to compare to Adelaide just because it was a lot of pain and a lot of personal issues that I got to fight and actually win a golf tournament.
Obviously it was great to play well today. Looking forward to working hard and getting better, but I don't think anything will compare to Adelaide.
Q. Can you take us through that second shot in the playoff?
ANTHONY KIM: Well, I noticed that the other three guys hit it really far, and I obviously don't hit it as far as them at 40 years old and broken body. I think I had 235 up a few, up 9, and the goal was to just land it on the front and chase it back there with a 5-wood because the rough was wet.
Just did what I was trying to do and executed the shot well.
Q. AK, when you won Adelaide, it was a Cinderella story, it was amazing, but I'm sure a lot of people think that might be it. Now that you've had the sixth place finish, it's the best you've ever done on LIV besides Adelaide. Do you feel like this almost proves even more that you're not going anywhere?
ANTHONY KIM: I don't give a shit what anybody thinks about me. I work hard. I stay with my family. Happy Mother's Day, Emily. To my mom, to all the moms that work hard, sacrifice for their children.
Yeah, I don't give a shit. This is what I do. I'm going to continue to keep working hard and keep getting better and see whatever happens.
Q. You mentioned your broken down body, but the way you're playing the golf courses is different these days but more strategy. If 2026 AK played a match against 2010 AK, how do you think that would go down?
ANTHONY KIM: That's a good question. 2010 me might not have shown up. So I like this one better.
(Laughter)
Q. Anthony, this would be your first time playing stateside since Adelaide. I wonder what was the support like over the four days?
ANTHONY KIM: Man, it's unbelievable. Obviously I played some decent golf 20 years ago where a few people knew who I was, but the amount of support I'm getting from people, not only from golfers, but people outside of golf fighting their own issues, because we all have them, has been nothing short of amazing.
I really can't believe how many people are influenced by me just trying to play golf. I know I'm very blessed to do it. So that's why it's on me to keep working hard.
Q. Dustin, there's obviously been a lot of news over the past couple weeks regarding LIV. I just wonder what's your faith that there's a path forward beyond this year for this Tour?
DUSTIN JOHNSON: I mean, LIV obviously, I think we're in a pretty good spot. Just look at our events, look at the players we got. So I'm confident in the people running the show that we will continue on.
Yeah, I think all the guys, we really love being out here. It's very enjoyable. We love competing against each other. We're only getting better. Yeah, I'm very confident in our leadership.
Q. I just wanted to ask DJ and TD about next week going into Aronimink. DJ, just get your thoughts first, how you feel going into the next major?
DUSTIN JOHNSON: Yeah, I feel good. I feel like the game's really solid. Definitely could tighten up a few things, but I feel like it's getting close to taking a turn to being really good.
I'm putting it well. My short game's very good. Just need to clean up the iron play a little bit. Everything else is really solid.
I played Aronimink before. Looking forward to going back there. I'm sure it's going to be in really good shape. It's going to be a great week. I'm looking forward to competing next week.
Q. TD, obviously going in with great form?
THOMAS DETRY: Yes, I went to Aronimink last week just on a quick trip on Wednesday. So I scoped out the golf course. Just a major. My strategy at majors is sort of to just keep the same routine as in a normal tournament and treat the major as if it was a normal tournament. I feel like you're already beating half the field because some of the people are sort of shooting themselves out of the field by putting too much pressure on themselves.
No, just treating next week like another tournament, and that's it.
Q. One thing about the U.S. Open, obviously that was on the line for the LIV exemption, but you still have some other pathways to get there?
THOMAS DETRY: I've got plenty of pathways to get there, I'm not worried about it. The way I'm playing golf, I don't think it's possible for me to not play the U.S. Open.
