Quick Quotes
Q. Joining us after the first round of the Mizuho Americas Open is Lily Peng. Lily, a great round today; three birdies on your card. Can you just talk about what was going well for you out there?
LILY PENG: I think just getting my first birdie on seven, that really difficult par-3, I think definitely set the tone.
And then think after that, just the par-5s, just keeping it below the hole and keeping it safe.
Q. Yeah, we've had a lot of people talking about importance of keeping it below the hole at this course. Could you just give us some insight into the greens and how important it is to have your shots go exactly where you want them to?
LILY PENG: Yeah, I think the greens are super fast, super slopey. I think definitely on nine keeping it below the hole is super important, otherwise it's almost an automatic bogey. I think that always being the forefront of my mind when I'm hitting my approach shots has really helped me.
Q. You played in a group with some other the girls you know obviously pretty well and you guys all played really well. What was it like getting to play out there with your friends on an LPGA Tour course?
LILY PENG: Yeah, it's super special. This event is one of a kind, so just really good memories.
Q. And then three more rounds ahead of us. What do you think is going to be really important to capitalize on your good score from today?
LILY PENG: I think just same thing: keeping it below the hole and playing consistent and not being too aggressive when you don't need to be.
Q. So this week it's really cool that there is a mentorship program that goes on with the juniors and pros.
LILY PENG: Uh-huh.
Q. Who is your pro this week and what are some of the things you've done to bond a little bit?
LILY PENG: Yeah, I have Pauline Bouchard. I had her last year as well, so we were familiar with each other. Timing didn't quite work out this week so didn't really get to spend a lot time together, but I think she's an amazing player so just kind of watching what she does, you know.
Q. Are there any pros out there that now that you're up close with them, getting to see them in action that really have your eye this year that you're just like, oh, their game is super, super solid and you're trying to take some pointers away from?
LILY PENG: Yeah, I mean, all the pros I think watching their games up close you're just like, wow. And then seeing what they post score-wise you're like, yeah, that makes since, because they hit the fairway, hit the green, ten feet, and make the putt.
Q. What's the thing that you really look forward to most? Obviously you're a returner this year. What's super, super special about being at Mizuho Americas Open for you?
LILY PENG: Just a fresh course is nice. Always playing with the pros is the biggest highlight, so, yeah.
