Stacy Lewis

Houston, Texas, USA

Memorial Park Golf Course

Quick Quotes

Q. Joining us after the second round of The Chevron Championship is Stacy Lewis. Stacy, we did a little bit of retirement send off at LOTTE in the fall. A lot of things have changed since then. Talk a little bit about finishing out here in your hometown with your family around you.

STACEY LEWIS: Yeah, I told my husband today that probably if I had it my way I would've been done in Hawai'i where there wasn't as much -- as many people around and I played a little bit better.

But this week was just about having my family out and for my parents. In Houston was where it really all started for me, so kind of came full circle. This tournament is so important four me. It was my first win and really set off my career.

So I guess just a meaningful week. And I wish I would've played a little bit better, but I guess I have a little bit of an excuse.

But still a good way to go off.

Q. You've certainly left the LPGA better than when you found it. Talk about any parting words, wise words to the athletes still out there.

STACEY LEWIS: I would just say to stay involved with the business of the Tour and to know what's going on. They can make a difference. You can make change happen. To keep giving back to the fans and to our sponsors and never stop saying thank you. I just don't think we can ever say thank you enough.

And just be grateful for every opportunity that you have.

Q. Saw you on the 18th green wiping away tears. What did that mean to you?

STACEY LEWIS: Well, the tears were more because I looked at my dad. I probably shouldn't have looked at my dad. I guess my emotions are probably a lot different than theirs. They're probably a little bit more sad, where I'm just ready. I'm ready for the next chapter and ready to stop grinding over eight footers like that on the last hole when it doesn't matter.

But that's just who I am.

So yeah, it was just more seeing the family and seeing the friends and kind of their emotions.

Q. Having your dad on the bag for the last hole, throwing back to how it all started?

STACEY LEWIS: Yes, yes.

Q. What did you talk about coming up the last fairway?

STACEY LEWIS: We were just talking about the golf course today and how it played, all the fairway woods I've hit into greens this week. Tried to keep it pretty casual. I knew he was going to be a little bit more emotional, so I had to finish out the round.

But just talking about the day. But I have to give credit to my husband for that one. He was the one that had that idea. So pretty cool because he caddied for me so much early on, my amateur days and even into the start of my professional career. So was a pretty fitting end, and I know he was bummed he couldn't do the whole thing. His knees made it around here two days, so...

Q. When you became a parent for the first time did it change your perspective on how your dad saw you?

STACEY LEWIS: Totally.

Q. And has viewed what your career has been like?

STACEY LEWIS: (Video froze.) The more I saw out here just how lucky I was to have the parents I did. I think we're all frustrated with our parents at times, but looking back I was so lucky compared to a lot of the players out here and a lot of kids we see at the college level.

You know, they supported me and he wanted me to play good golf and he loved how much I played and he loved it as much as I did. But he just wanted me to enjoy it and he never pushed me. It all came from me.

When I got married we asked them to take a step back and he did. So I just so lucky to have the parents that I did.

Q. If you could go back and tell Stacy that won the Chevron what to expect from her golf career, what would you say to her?

STACEY LEWIS: I mean, I don't even know. I just think back to the kid in high school wearing a back brace and being told I have to have surgery to 25 plus years later to still be playing golf, to be doing it at this level to gave accomplished what I did, I mean, it's really kind of a fairytale.

I don't think this is -- anyone would've predicted any of this. So I'm just really grateful. Grateful for the opportunities I had and all the people that supported me along the way.

Q. I know one of them has lived it with you, but what will you tell your little ones about your LPGA Tour career someday?

STACEY LEWIS: Well, it was important for me to at least have Chesnee be a part of all this, for her to see all this and grow up really on the road and in this environment.

How much she learned I think from being around the other players, you know, she made a comment about my husband's team and they weren't doing a lot of practicing and she goes, well, if you don't practice you don't get better. I'm like, all right, we've at least learned one thing, just the work ethic she's seen.

She's seen everything I've done behind the scenes to try to get ready to play golf the next day and what it takes. She'll appreciate it more once she's a little bit older.

Q. You said when you came up here this is the Nelly Korda special going on.

STACEY LEWIS: Yes.

Q. What is it about this golf course that is so good for her?

STACEY LEWIS: This thing is a ball-strikers' paradise, and she can just control her golf ball so well directionally. I feel like that that's the most important thing, is if you can miss it on the right side of the holes it's relatively easy up and downs.

So I think she has so much control of her golf ball, more so than anybody else. She obviously loves the setup because it's long. She's able to hit 7-irons and 8-irons that she's normally not, she's normally hitting wedges a lot. So she enjoys the setup.

I would look for more of the same this weekend.

Q. What's the ideal major championship setup in your mind?

STACEY LEWIS: I think this is close. Obviously if it's firmer that would be ideal. I thought the setup was okay. I thought there was a couple holes, like 13, I think it's usually played as a very short par-4 with kind of a hard green.

I would like to sea that played shorter where you got to hit a wedge shot, control the spin, that kind of thing. Maybe throw in a little bit shorter of a par-4 kind of like.

But that's the only thing I can complain about with the setup. There is a lot of variety. It think just a shorter hole or two just to make people think a little bit.

Q. What's on your schedule next? You don't feel the need to go hit balls now after your round?

STACEY LEWIS: No, I mean, I don't know the next time I will play 18 holes so probably will be after -- might be this time next year, maybe in the pro-am here next year. I don't know. Chesnee has school on Monday and we'll get right back into the routine of things. My husband has a lot going on.

Back to normal life.

Q. (Regarding first pitch.)

STACEY LEWIS: I have thrown out first pitches before. I got to make sure my feet are functioning tomorrow, and we'll soak them in the bathtub tonight and be ready to go.
