Quick Quotes
Q. How do you sum up the week? Pretty awesome week.
DAVID PUIG: Yeah, you know, worked really hard the last couple weeks, obviously especially last week with my coach in town and Dave. Actually Josele was there and so was Luis. I brought Luis from Madrid. It's awesome to see the three of us playing pretty good golf.
We're youngsters, but we really are feeling like we really want to win. We put a lot of hours behind it, and it's just kind of great to see that it definitely paid off this week.
But yeah, I didn't really feel at my best. Today was by far the best day, how I hit it. Obviously the greens are whatever. But I felt especially the last couple days I took a lot of advantage of the first greens that I putted on. They're obviously better, right. The first few greens we play on, they're a little better. I definitely took advantage of that today, as well.
Struggled a little bit to finish. I hit amazing putts on 13 and three-putted, 15 and three-putted. I guess it's kind of how it goes. But proud of the weekend especially.
Q. You started out so well. You were probably thinking, maybe I can apply a little bit of pressure on Jon. What were you thinking during that stretch?
DAVID PUIG: Obviously I still think I had my chances, right, even with how good he started. But I was 6-under after 10, three back. Hit the fairway on 11, which is pretty huge. I actually hit a pretty good wedge shot. Couldn't make birdie, and didn't birdie the par-5. Hit a couple good few shots as well and made the bogey. But if I birdie 11 and 12 -- I'm pretty much chipping on 11 and 12 is reachable and I go to 18 while he's at 19, I definitely had my chances.
Obviously tried my hardest, but it just wasn't enough. But I think that's my first second ever.
Q. What does it mean that not only three Spaniards in the top 3 (indiscernible) which are you more proud of?
DAVID PUIG: Probably Spanish. It's just amazing to see us three in the top 3. Obviously we're really good friends, all of us, and we see each other every week. Josele is kind of starting to get in that boat a little bit. But me and Jon, we spend, like, at least four or five days a week when we're playing together and working out. It's obviously great for me to have him around because he teaches me a lot of stuff.
But at the same time, I think it's good for him, as well, a little bit. Just amazing really proud of that.
Q. You guys picked each other's walk-up songs, right? What's the deal with his song?
DAVID PUIG: With Jon?
Q. With Josele's. The Fireballs picked each other's --
DAVID PUIG: Yeah, yeah. I never heard it because I picked Luis's. What song did he have?
Q. It was like this wacky song, Dancing Queen --
DAVID PUIG: Oh, yeah, in Chinese. I went kind of crazy on Luis, too. It's supposed to be fun. This week it's not the easiest hole to have it on, especially if you're playing to win and you kind of hear something funny, it's kind of hard. We actually copied from Legion. I think it's just great.
Q. You've got a chance at Virginia to get that last exemption snot for the U.S. Open. Especially after today, how much do you think you'll be thinking about that?
DAVID PUIG: A lot. I'm actually probably with that second place, hopefully I'm a little closer to the top 60, as well, in case that exemption doesn't come through. But I think about it all the time. Playing majors is just amazing. You know, that's why I'm extremely proud this week because the first day I played all right, but the second day I hit it awful. I was 4-over at some point and 2-over on the tournament and managed to get it to 16-under par with 18 holes to go, which is 8-under in 20 something holes, which is amazing. Very proud of that.
The second spot obviously gives me a lot of points for world rankings, but at the same time for leverage, it's great.
