Quick Quotes
Q. Can you just talk us through your round? Obviously great playing out there today.
LUIS MASAVEU: Yeah, it was great. I think I've played super solid. I missed in the right spots, which it was one of the things that I didn't do very well, and when I was out of position throughout the year I was trying to push too much, and I just stayed very calm today, same as yesterday.
I think yesterday was a very learning round because I started very bad. That's what I've been doing all this year. I was 3-over, and instead of just trying to push too hard or trying to be too hard on myself, I just smiled and kept trying, and all of a sudden everything went in, and I just tried to do the same today, and it went very well.
Q. How does it feel to go into the weekend in contention? I think last year in Spain at a Challenge Tour event you were tied for the lead going into the weekend. How nice is it to have that to lean back on?
LUIS MASAVEU: Yeah, it's great, that feeling of going out there and knowing that you're close to the lead. You see yourself on the leaderboard, it's great. I didn't experience that last year a lot, and not this year, so yeah, I'm looking forward to it.
Q. How excited or anxious are you to chase that first win out here?
LUIS MASAVEU: Yeah, one of my goals this year was to get my first professional win. I've been trying my hardest all the off-season, all this year, and the results were not coming, but I'm just going to stay patient. I don't know if it's going to come on Sunday or in three weeks, but I'm just going to try my best.
Q. Can you talk us through that shot right next to the tree? That was pretty impressive.
LUIS MASAVEU: Yeah, I had a little bit of gap to be able to get it out. I was trying to get it as close as possible to the green, and I ended up hitting it so well that it kind of chased up. Yeah, I was very happy with that shot.
Q. Not exactly a shot you practice.
LUIS MASAVEU: No, you don't practice. It's one of those shots that the best thing you can do is not think too much. It's just trying to -- some shots you know how to do them because you know how to grip the club, you know how to get it out, and just don't think too much and hit it.
Q. What difference did you notice between your first round and today?
LUIS MASAVEU: Well, look, the truth is there hasn’t been much of a difference. I played very well yesterday. Maybe even better than today. The only thing is I started with three three-putts and missed a five-foot birdie putt. Then, on the last 10 holes yesterday, I played very well.
And today, the only difference was that I didn’t start off badly. Things have been going my way. The birdies have been falling.
Q. Hey, Luis, you were really solid around the greens. Let’s talk a little bit about how important the short game is on this course.
LUIS MASAVEU: I think it’s a course where if you hit it well (indiscernible)... You have to approach well. I think that was pretty key today. Because especially with the way the greens are, and how two- or three-meter putts fall, it’s pretty complicated. And since I approached so well, I didn’t even need to make those putts.
Q. Any in particular that you remember?
LUIS MASAVEU: Well, I’d say the best one was on the par-3. The one on the 14th hole, where I hit it to the right. I’d just made quite a few birdies, and I think that par really helped me keep making birdies.
Q. Luis, what has been the biggest challenge you’ve faced here so far?
LUIS MASAVEU: Well, I think that with LIV, ultimately, playing with your idols—whether you like it or not—creates a lot of pressure. And I think you have to know how to handle it. And well, you learn little by little.
Q. How do you see LIV growing globally?
LUIS MASAVEU: Well, I think it’s growing a lot more every year. Last year I played nine tournaments. And this year is already my sixth. And I think it’s growing tremendously. We saw it in South Africa, the number of people there. In Australia too, the crowds. Well, I think it’s a product that’s improving little by little; it’s just getting started. And it’s improving a lot.
