Torque GC
Press Conference
THE MODERATOR: Abraham, how are you? Welcome to Mexico.
ABRAHAM ANCER: Very well, very well, thank you very much. How are you?
Q. Everything's great, thank you very much. This is your first time playing in Mexico City as a member of Torque. How has the reception been so far? How have you been feeling?
ABRAHAM ANCER: Honestly, pretty happy. We've had a great time. I feel like we're a very close-knit group. We also have a lot of shared goals. We help each other; I feel like we complement each other very well.
This year, I feel like we've had to play well in some parts, but not all four of us completely together in a tournament. I feel like we're very, very close to catching a good streak. But it's been incredible. They're friends I've had for many, many years.
I've been playing with Carlos since I was a kid in the interregional and national tournaments in Mexico, in the youth tournaments, and then Muñoz since college and Joaquo since he came up, so we have a really great friendship. We're very competitive people who push each other to improve. So it's been truly incredible.
Q. The fact that Torque is the all-Mexican team, you experienced that back in Spain with the Fireballs, but now in your own country, I imagine that must be exciting too.
ABRAHAM ANCER: Yes, obviously, with the two of us Mexicans together in Mexico, it makes a lot of sense. And it really does make sense. So, I'm very happy to be together, to be hosting.
I feel like we Mexicans are great hosts. We always want people to have a good time, to enjoy the golf, the course, the food. So I think the welcome tomorrow when people can come in is going to be incredible, and I also feel that not having the tournament during Holy Week is going to help a lot.
Q. A T3 and a T6 so far this season. You're ninth overall. Tell me a little bit about the consistency you've shown this season. And what it takes to maintain it.
ABRAHAM ANCER: Yeah, honestly, I've felt really comfortable, except for one tournament where I had two bad rounds that kept me from having a shot at the top. But other than that, I've played very solidly. A third-place finish and a fourth-place finish in Riyadh were pretty solid. There are still a few things missing to be up there lifting a trophy in second place.
But I feel like I'm making good progress throughout the season. I'm performing better in places where, on paper, my golf might not be expected to be up there like in South Africa, where the course was very long and playing very, very soft due to the rain. And at altitude, too, I usually have a bit of a hard time adjusting to the altitude, which is helping me a little more this week as well.
But anyway, tt's been a very solid season, and I'm focused on this week, which is obviously very, very important to me.
Q. You were already telling us a bit about what happened to you in Riyadh and South Africa with those great performances. Does that motivate you to try to make your mark here at home?
And if you'll allow me a second question, how did you feel about the change of scenery at Torque? When you were introduced here a few months ago, they told us about the emotions and the great friendship you have with the guys. How has that also changed your mindset on the course?
ABRAHAM ANCER: Yeah, well, the truth is I feel really comfortable. The transition was relatively easy. As I mentioned, they're great friends. They welcomed me incredibly well. And I've known the entire team behind the players perfectly well for years now. So everything feels very natural. That helps a lot.
Feeling comfortable is important for playing good golf. And aside from that, the game feels good. My game feels comfortable. I've worked pretty hard when I'm at home to prepare more specifically for the weeks I'm heading into.
So, well, Chapo has always -- I've always had that little nagging feeling of wanting to play really, really well there. I've played in the WGC; I had a tournament where I performed well. But I do have to admit that it's a course where I struggle a lot around the greens.
The grass is completely different from where I grew up playing, and the elevation is also completely different. I grew up at sea level, with wind.
But little by little, I feel like I'm adjusting to perform better.
Q. You've mentioned before that playing at home sometimes puts a little pressure on you. How have you prepared yourself, especially mentally, to face this weekend?
ABRAHAM ANCER: Yes, I've always said that. Obviously, sometimes I feel like I put a little extra pressure on myself because I want to -- obviously, I'd go out there and enjoy it. It's just another tournament; don't think you're at home. But without meaning to, you put a little more pressure on yourself.
I got to play with two South Africans in South Africa, and I thought it was pretty cool how they handled it. They were really connected with the fans. They were very focused but they were enjoying themselves. And I feel like that's something I've been missing a bit, enjoying it. Having tournaments of this magnitude in our country is absolutely amazing.
So I feel like I'm very, very focused on my game. And if something goes a little wrong, maybe I get a little more frustrated. So it's about being more relaxed. Staying very focused but also enjoying it and letting things flow. I feel like that's something I need to work on. And that's what I'm going to try to do this week.
Q. Does the fact that there are four rounds instead of three make you feel more comfortable? Does it make no difference to you? How do you feel about it?
ABRAHAM ANCER: Honestly, it doesn't bother me whether I play three or four. I feel like three rounds is enough golf for anyone who's playing well this week. But I don't mind playing four. I've played four rounds my whole life.
I feel that if you're a pretty consistent player, who plays and is right there in the mix, maybe four rounds actually benefits you more.
So I have no problem playing three or four. Obviously, you always have to be playing your best. I feel like in three rounds, you feel a mistake more. You have less time to recover and all that, but like I said, if you're consistent, maybe four rounds can benefit you a little more.
Q. Tomorrow you're teeing off with Jon Rahm. What can you tell us about that, considering he's the leader?
ABRAHAM ANCER: I've played a lot with Jon this year and in past years as well. He's a beast to play against. He plays very, very well. Obviously, in the best sense of the word. He can hit any shot you want. High, low, fade, draw, impeccable short game. He putts very well. He has so much power, so much distance. We play completely different games. But anyway, he's a great guy. I feel like the times I've played with him, I've had a really good time. In fact, I've played pretty solidly when I've played with him.
So I'm excited for tomorrow. It's going to be a great tee time. Cam Smith will be there, too, who's been a great friend for many years. We're also paired with Pressy and Scott. So honestly, tomorrow is going to be a lot of fun.
Q. First time as a Torque member visiting Mexico City. What have been your impressions so far?
ABRAHAM ANCER: Really happy. They're great friends from a long, long time. We really enjoy playing together, spending time together. They're three guys that I really learn from, and I feel like we always help each other out to be a better person and a better golfer. It's been really, really cool to be a part of the team. They have been incredible the way they received me. It was a very easy transition.
Q. You're going to play tomorrow in one of the biggest pairings of the first round. How do you expect the reception of the people?
ABRAHAM ANCER: I think it's going to be incredible. I think Jon Rahm is going to be at least one of the favorites everywhere he goes in the world. I think all the Spaniards get a great reception, and they are very, very liked and loved here in Mexico. It's going to be fun.
Cam Smith is a great friend, as well. We've spent a lot of time together, a lot of rounds together. He's another incredible golfer that I really enjoy playing with, so I think it's going to be a really fun day tomorrow. Got to be focused. They're unbelievable players, so we've got to up our game to stay on top.
