Press Conference
E. LYS/P. Badosa
2-6, 7-5, 6-4
THE MODERATOR: Eva, congratulations on getting through a very tough match against a good friend. What are some of the emotions that you're feeling right now?
EVA LYS: Definitely very emotional, especially because it's the first win after my injury. I didn't expect it to be coming this fast.
Also, very emotional because it's never easy to play friends. Yeah, it was a great fight from Paula. I mean, I have the biggest respect for her. She's such an amazing and experienced player.
So, yeah, it wasn't easy, but at the end of the day, I'm just incredibly thankful, because the past months have been really, really tough, getting through the process, getting the knee healthy. It's just a really good reward.
THE MODERATOR: Questions in English.
Q. From a nightmare basically to a much-needed win for you. Can you describe a little bit how that happened from 6-2, 4-1 down?
EVA LYS: Honestly, I don't know. I went on court, and you guys could definitely see I wasn't able to find my groove. I gotta give a big compliment to Paula, because she's playing so fast, and she's really taking so much time away from you, especially from a player that hasn't had a lot of match experience the past weeks.
But I really tried not to look at the score and just tried to find my game. I feel like my goal for this match was to come closer and closer to the tennis I want to play, just find the rhythm, find the shots, because I just didn't have the opportunity to play matches.
Yeah, the longer the match went on, the better I started feeling, the better I started playing. Honestly, even in the second set, I didn't really think about winning the match. I just thought about, yeah, keeping the same pace and the same shots going.
Yeah, I didn't expect to come out as a winner, but it just shows me that I'm definitely finding my game, and it's definitely giving me confidence.
Q. Maybe on one side you could expect it as you are a home player, but on the other side, you were down 6-2, 4-1, and I could still hear a lot of people cheering for you, chanting your name. Did you recognize that in that moment, like sort of pumping you a little bit? Or you were just more focused on yourself?
EVA LYS: No, I was definitely really trying to get the energy out of the crowd. Even though I was down, whenever I had a good shot, they were cheering for me. They were supporting me.
It definitely means a lot that I'm playing at home, and the first win after a really bad start of the year was at home makes me very emotional.
Also, yeah, you don't have that many tournaments where the whole stadium is probably cheering for you, so I definitely took their energy and they are 100% a part of why I won today.
Q. My idea watching at least the first part of the match was probably that the heavy shots from Paula were giving you a lot of trouble, the pace, like you weren't able to put your pace on the ball.
EVA LYS: Yeah.
Q. Was that probably the reason why you started at some point playing better, finding more time for hitting the ball?
EVA LYS: 100%. It's funny, because also when I started practicing with players, I feel like I'm very blessed to be able to practice with really good players, especially -- I practiced with Coco, I also practiced with Paula, and I'm always talking to my dad, Hey, if I lose the set 6-0, then be it. Like, I need players that put a lot of pressure on myself, because this is, at the end of the day, the level they're playing.
If I can't deal with the pressure, then I have to step up my game. I know that I always need time, whether it's on court, off court, I'm never the player that, yeah, gets fit really quick or, like, every process is just, like, I've got to be patient.
The same thing in matches. I was really just trying to stay patient and trying to get every shot better than the last one. I mean, you could see in the first set I wasn't able to handle the pace, but it got better and better.
I love actually playing with pace, and I knew it's just a matter of time, if not today, then the next match, but I'm really happy I was able to really find my rhythm today.
