Quick Quotes
Q. Just talk about making the cut, obviously, but what was the key today?
MICHAEL BRENNAN: Yeah, it was pretty resilient. I was pretty nervous to start the round today. More so than yesterday. I don't know why. Cut day, I don't know. I probably was thinking about it too much.
But a little nervy start. Didn't hit a great chip on one. Not a very committed putt on one, but I kind of just kept bouncing back. I hit it in the trees on nine, ten, and 11, and hit really good punch-outs or kind of shots out of the trees that weren't in the fairway.
Could have gotten up and down on nine. Chipped in for birdie on ten and made a nice par on 11. That was really kind of huge in the middle of the round to keep things going.
I hit a really good shot into 15. I don't know how it landed on the green and still ended up in the water with a 6-iron. The greens are firm. I don't know how it doesn't bounce up, but bounced back nicely. Made a couple of really nice putts on 16 and 17.
Q. I've talked to your family. How important is it for them to be here and share this? I know you're pretty close.
MICHAEL BRENNAN: It's great. I have a lot of friends, friends from school, friends from back home here. I've gone into the course every day with a few buddies, so they love it. It's been really fun to have the support out here this week.
Q. Obviously Sean, you hadn't talked about him caddying for the par-3. That was pretty special. You guys are 15 months apart, I think.
MICHAEL BRENNAN: Very close in age. We grew up really close. He's incredible, but yeah, it was a fun par-3. Played with Cam and Sam, so we had a lot of kids in the group as well running around, which made it exciting because they were having a blast. It was really fun.
Q. Now that you've made the cut, what's the plan on the weekend around here? It could be dangerous this weekend.
MICHAEL BRENNAN: Yeah, the course is, I'm sure, just going to get a little bit tougher, but I'm still trying to win a golf tournament.
Q. First Masters, made the cut. How does that make you feel?
MICHAEL BRENNAN: It feels great. Yeah, I don't want to come here and miss the cut. I'm excited to have made it. I'm very happy with how I finished today. Played some really good golf kind of in the middle of the round.
Yeah, I'm just pleased with how my game feels. I think I could get more out of my round than I have the first couple of days. I think I'm playing better than I'm scoring, so just hopefully maybe get a little bit more out of it this weekend.
Q. I want to go back to 16, 17 in particular with that final stretch here in the round. How big is that feeling? You talk about how you were even more nervous today than you were yesterday. How big is that for just calming the nerves going into tomorrow?
MICHAEL BRENNAN: Yeah, it's huge. I started seeing the new a new putting coach last week, and -- or two weeks ago in Houston. I kind of made a few minor changes to how I kind of -- the stroke and how I feel. It's harder to commit to things like that when you're nervous, and I kind of struggled with that early on today. Just a bit of a mixed pattern, you know, with the putting.
It was frustrating. Didn't hit great putts. Missed a few, but later in the round I really kind of settled down, committed to a few good lines, put some good rolls on it. You know, glad we got a couple right.
Q. What's the word on the new putting coach?
MICHAEL BRENNAN: Marcus Potter is his name. I was putting terrible, and I wanted someone to help me out. I asked around, and he seemed like a good guy to go see.
Q. Do you think working out with him and fixing up things sort of helped you get to this point where you're going to make the cut for tomorrow?
MICHAEL BRENNAN: Yeah, for sure. I mean, it hadn't been great this week, but in Houston I putted really nicely, so that was really encouraging kind of week one right out of the bat.
Overall I'm very encouraged about my progress with the putter and how things are going. Yeah, I'm really happy about it, but I've been hitting the ball really well this week. Drive it great. Hit my irons pretty solid. Been working with the same coach since I was a kid. Adam Harrell is his name. He's kind of my go-to with everything. A lot revolves around him and his opinion, and so it's been really great.
I just am very encouraged and thankful to have the team that I do around me, because I feel like I'm getting some pretty good input.
Q. Are there any shots or holes on this course that you have to lock it in a little more mentally and focus on it?
MICHAEL BRENNAN: Second shot into 15 is really hard. The green is not very deep. It's very firm. I hit a good shot today. I thought we had the wind right, but I guess it wasn't. It flew about seven, eight paces shorter than I thought it was going to, which don't love when that happens.
But, yeah, the wind just kind of is tough. It's pretty swirly out here. Even on 18 I hit a good second shot in the green that flew way longer than I thought it was going to. So just trying to put those in the memory bank, keep track of that, and improve going forward.
