Shadow Creek
Quick Quotes
Q. I'm with Hannah Screen after an opening 69. 3-under here at Shadow Creek. Talk us through your round today. Lots of birdies out there.
HANNAH SCREEN: Yeah, lots of birdies. I think my caddie and I did such a good job getting the right numbers. You can figure out the number and then you're playing 20 short of it because the greens are extremely firm.
So I think just having that trust with each other, like he was going off my gut feel and I was going off his numbers, and that really helped me today. I hit quite a few shots within three foot, so that always helps make some birdies.
Q. You hit the opening tee shot this morning, in the first group from the first tee.
HANNAH SCREEN: Yeah.
Q. What was that like seeing the sunrise this morning and getting under way?
HANNAH SCREEN: Yeah, it was really special. I think I only got in this event two and a half weeks ago. I was first reserve, so just so happy to be here and be in the field. I got to play with Jenny Shin. Obviously she's such a good LPGA player. I think she's told me she's been 15, 16 years on Tour.
Just to see how she went about her stuff is really special.
Q. In terms of some of the birdies you made today, talk us through a couple of them.
HANNAH SCREEN: Gosh, I'm trying to think. I made a really nice one on 16. I hit it in the rough for my layup. It was really difficult. I managed to pitch it just before the green and it rolled out, and then I holed a nice 15-footer. So that was really good.
Q. And obviously had lots of experience in the United States with college in Texas and Oklahoma. Has that helped you this week knowing different types of golf courses?
HANNAH SCREEN: Yeah, I think so. I think when I was in college you hit with a 60-degree for like four years just because of American style courses. So I like chipping with a 60. Even today it's a really tough course, so I knew I was going to have some up and downs, and it really kept my momentum going using the 60-degree.
Q. How different was the course today? When we think about the wind on Tuesday, that would've been pretty tough starting this first round.
HANNAH SCREEN: Yeah, it was tough. It was almost nice to have it a bit stiller today. As I say I was really taking my time and my caddie. I'm usually quite a quick player but I think I slowed down a lot today and it actually helped me. Happy I did that and figured out the wind.
Q. Did you have any particular score in mind today given not too much wind?
HANNAH SCREEN: No, not at all. When you're at a place like Shadow Creek you cannot say a number out loud. You just don't know what's going to happen. I just went out there, and as cliche as it is, you have to stay present and play one shot at a time, and I think that helped today.
Q. Can you finally talk about what it's like playing here, an iconic venue, fantastic field, all 20 in the top ranking, co-sanctioned? How cool is that for the players?
HANNAH SCREEN: Yeah, very cool. The girls coming over from LET it's a great experience for us just to be around these players and even on practice days you kind of see, oh, I'm doing something similar to them on the putting green or they're doing this on the range.
Or even when they're warming up you can see what the best players in the world are doing and you can really take that on board and it is cool for me just being a around some top players in the locker room, at breakfast with them. It's definitely pinch-me moment sometimes.
