Press Conference
THE MODERATOR: Let's welcome to the media center Thomas Detry, 4Aces GC. 4-under 67 today, currently T2 at 7-under. What's your experience playing this course here at Sentosa, and has it met your expectations as a challenging test?
THOMAS DETRY: It definitely has met my expectations. I came here 10 years ago with a friend and just played a round of golf, so I sort of vaguely remember the course.
But I was not expecting such a good golf course. It's unbelievable, from the back tees, with the wind, the quality of the greens, how firm it is, as well. It's pretty incredible.
No, I was pleasantly surprised, and I'm up for the challenge. It's definitely a challenge out there, so anything under par is pretty good, and I managed to do that pretty well.
Q. Your third shot on 18 for eagle, as soon as you hit that, did you think it had a chance of rolling in?
THOMAS DETRY: I only had one goal, it was just to try to get it over that sort of slope with the right speed, and as soon as it came off, I was like, all right, that looks pretty good. So I was like -- as soon as it sort of got halfway down the slope, I was like, it's perfect, it's going to trickle down there, and I didn't really care what it was doing after that. It kept tracking, kept tracking, kept tracking, looked better and better and it just dropped in with the perfect pace. It was pretty cool. I'm looking forward to seeing that on my phone on social media after this.
Q. Thomas, this is your 14th career round in LIV Golf, and you've been in the top 5 eight times. Did you feel like it would be this kind of transition that you seem to have made in this new environment? Did you feel like you would ease into it as fast as you have?
THOMAS DETRY: Not really, to be honest. I wasn't expecting that smooth of a transition. I've always got off to a very good start to my season over the last couple of years, like on the PGA TOUR. I always got off to a very strong start to the season, always used to play well at Torrey and obviously Phoenix last year, won, and even Hawai'i.
I was sort of more nervous to not get off to that good start. That was really my goal for the start of the year. So I really grinded it out the whole winter season. I was working hard with my coach and making sure I was just on top of my game, and it seems like it's paying off, so it's working.
Q. One bogey through 36 holes here; that's pretty impressive given as tough as this course is.
THOMAS DETRY: Yeah, it sounds a bit silly, but I have not been on top of my ball-striking that well. I've hit a lot of fairways, which is good, but the irons were not that great. It's not easy; the greens are really firm and it's windy. But my scrambling has been really, really good. I've pretty much made up-and-down from everywhere, rough, bunker, bad lie, you name it, I was getting it up-and-down all the time.
Pretty proud of that bounce-back on 15 because I hit it right on 15 and then I had no lie in the bunker, so I had to lay up, hit a great wedge shot to four feet, made par there, and then birdied 16, 17, and then eagled 18. That was a nice little bit of resilience, I would say, where I stayed patient and made a good par there, and then after that I followed it up with a nice little momentum change. That was great.
Q. With you being three strokes away from the leader, what would be the key movement for you over the next two days?
THOMAS DETRY: Three shots away individually or for the team? Individually?
Q. Yes.
THOMAS DETRY: You know, the same mojo as I've had the last couple of weeks. It seems like it's pretty tight on top and it's quite a few players. Keep making birdies. Definitely the course is tricky at some parts, but it definitely gives you chances. The par-5s are reachable. There's a couple of short par-3s where you have a few wedges in your hands, as well, so you can definitely take advantage of those holes, especially the holes downwind, and I think that's going to be the key tomorrow, and then obviously manage those holes into the wind as well as you can.
Q. Last week obviously you played great. This week you're playing great. But Hong Kong Golf Club and Sentosa really could not be any more different in terms of the way they play. Do you think that's a testament to the overall state of your game from tee to green and on the greens?
THOMAS DETRY: 100 percent. It's a nice proof to myself that my game is in the right place and that I can compete on every single golf course.
I mean, I've already proved it in the past that I can play well anywhere, short courses, long courses. I hit it far enough so I can compete in majors, as well.
But definitely this week and last week, it couldn't be any different. I love both type of golf courses, and I love hitting 4- and 5-irons into a par-4 and I love having tiny little greens where you have to hit a 7-iron and a wedge. I think it's two different styles of golf course, but it's really fun. It's really fun, and I'm just embracing it. I think it's a great little change.
We're going from -- I think last week was a little bit softer, this week is a little bit firmer. No, it's great.
