THE MODERATOR: Let's welcome to the media center Jon Rahm, captain of Legion XIII. Jon, 3-under 68, currently at T2, 7-under. Really solid round out there today. You battled through a stretch of 11 consecutive pars and then finished with a birdie on 18. How did you feel about your round?
JON RAHM: I felt really good. Started off great those first two holes. Even a great tee shot on 3, which is hard to do. Bad second shot. But 4, 5, 6, all great shots. I didn't make many bad shots, many bad swings today. The only ones that were really bad, I would say, second shot on 3, tee shot on 7. Those cost me a shot and a half right there, hitting it in the water on 7 and the mis-hit on 3, and then maybe the second shot on 13. Even that one was on the green.
It was a day where I hit it really, really well, hit a lot of fairways, just on that stretch of pars I couldn't convert. I had three very good looks, on 8, on 14 and on 16, and a couple others maybe outside the makeable range but still makeable putts from 20 feet that didn't go in. It could have been better, but I played a really good round of golf.
To finish off with a great birdie on 18 is a good feeling. Still really good golf, played great tee to green, and hopefully I can replicate it on the weekend.
Q. Is there anything in particular you focus on entering Saturday and Sunday?
JON RAHM: It's going to be based on what we have weather-wise. There's a storm possibly coming in today, possibly tomorrow morning. We don't know what's going to happen.
Even though this golf course drains probably better than 99.9 percent of the golf courses out there, if we get a few-hour storm like you can here, then it will make everything a little bit softer. Making the greens a little bit more accessible would mean obviously more birdies because right now there's some holes where unless you're very aggressive and can hit it way down there to where you have a short iron in hand with 8-, 7-irons, it's not the easiest to hit it close to.
If it were to happen. If not, keep playing the way I have, play really good golf, and hopefully roll a few more in.
Q. Jon, you played a par-5 today that you didn't birdie. That's almost like a shock now because that's the first time that's happened in a couple weeks.
JON RAHM: I guess. I didn't even think about that. I had no idea. It's funny because there is certain luck involved for that to happen, as well. Last week on Sunday on the third hole I know I made birdie. I had an eagle putt, but that ball was two feet from being in the hazard off the tee. So I guess that's the two feet I needed today. It all evens out.
It was still a battle for par. Yeah, it's not something I think about, to be honest. It's just whenever one of you guys or Su or Jerry mentions one of those streaks is the only time I know because I'm not actively thinking about it.
Q. This stretch that you're on right now to start the season, would you say there's one particular aspect of the game that you've been pleasantly surprised about?
JON RAHM: I wouldn't say surprised. I put a lot of work in in the off-season. It's just nice to see it all unfold as well as it has. I would just say in general, everything is a little bit better than it was last year, possibly two years ago, as well. Playing really good golf right now.
Yeah, I don't know what the numbers say, but clearly I'm hitting it really well tee to green and making few more putts. It's just to say, everything is just a little bit -- not massively, but a little bit better, in that one to two shots a tournament, even a round, it's a massive difference.
Q. What would be key tomorrow for you to make a run for the title?
JON RAHM: Same thing I've done the last two days. Just convert a few more -- I shot 3-under today and did not really make any putts. If I can keep putting good rolls, good swings out there, give myself chances, I'm doing more than enough to have a good chance.
Q. Jon, this week so far you're second off the tee, you're fifth on approach. Last week was similar. When you go home at night and reflect on your round, what's more important to you, how you score or how you play?
JON RAHM: I mean, at the end of the day, there's no pictures on the scorecard, right? So score is number one. But in the long run, if you feel like you're making good swings and playing good, I think that has also an effect. A bit of both. But score is what matters.
Q. To follow up, if today you didn't hit the ball well and you made 200 feet of putts, tonight would you be feeling more optimistic tomorrow than you do today when you struck the ball incredibly well?
JON RAHM: I don't think there would be a difference. I'd probably be thinking why did I miss, what could I have done better, because there's a million reasons why somebody misses.
It would all depend on how it went down, but I would probably be more comfortable knowing that I've played well in a scenario like that because you're not going to be making 200 feet of putts every day, but you can't replicate good ball-striking. Again, depending on the scenario, it's a bit of both. But at the end of the day, the score is the only thing that matters.
