Postgame Press Conference
Boise State 68, San Jose State 51
THE MODERATOR: For San Jose State we have Katarina Anderson, Maya Anderson, Coach Jonas Chatterton. Coach, start with you. Get some thoughts on today's game.
JONAS CHATTERTON: First and foremost, credit to Boise State. I thought they executed. I mean, they're a veteran group, and I thought they executed when they needed to and made the plays when they needed to.
I thought that for our standpoint I thought we really battled. Might have been one of our better defensive games all year, and we just couldn't get enough shots to go down over the top of us.
And then, you know, not that this is everything, but it's hard to overcome a discrepancy in free-throws when it's 26-12. It just hadn't been that way all conference all year and so it was just a little different today. I felt like in the way they called it, inconsistent a little bit, but other than that, proud of our effort, and credit to Boise State.
THE MODERATOR: Questions for our student-athletes.
Q. Maya, every time they seem to build a little bit of lead, you came back and punched back a little bit. What kept you fighting through that?
MAYA ANDERSON: I think just our mentality going into it. We have three seniors, and even if we won or lost, this is one of the last times we were going to play together, so I think our mindset was just to go out there and, like, give it everything we got, so we just didn't give up.
I think that's what kept us kind of battling back throughout the game.
Q. Building off that comment for Kat, what was special to you about this team?
KATARINA ANDERSON: I think there's a lot of things special about this team. Like Maya said, there's three seniors, and Amira was hurt and stuff, but me and McKenna really tried to like carry on spirit in with Amira.
And then I think our resilience on the court. Like on offense when we wouldn't get a bucket, we would get back in on defense and try to get it back.
THE MODERATOR: Thank you, ladies. Questions for Coach.
Q. What are you most proud of with this group?
JONAS CHATTERTON: Well, we just talked about this in the locker room, but this is a group that when I got this job and I got it late, there's a bunch of kids in that room who had never played double-digit minutes in a game, had never -- no one on this roster had scored double figures or averaged double figures in a season in college basketball.
Putting together a bunch of players who really are trying to step into roles that they're not ready for and weren't used to, and I thought as we went through the season, you know, continued to battle, and I couldn't be more proud of these guys every day showing up.
Our record is obviously not near what we want it to be in the future and moving forward in this program, but for right now the way we've practiced, the way we've approached things, I think these kids deserve a ton of credit.
We got kids like Kat Anderson, who she's a foster kid and a guardian of her sister. She's got more stuff on her plate than most adults do.
We've got a group of great kids who have shown up and tried to play. At the end of the day, we're just not talented enough to compete at the highest level in this league, and that's my job is to get the talent level obviously to that level. That's where we're going and trending in this direction.
But, you know, for this group this year they showed up and competed and played for their talents and their abilities.
