Press Conference
THE MODERATOR: Let's welcome to the media center Thomas Detry and Thomas Pieters, 4Aces GC. TP, we'll start with you. 9-under on the day. Please just walk us through your round and how you felt.
THOMAS PIETERS: Like every shot? I did not miss a shot today. It was some of the best golf I've played. I didn't make anything the last two days, and I made some nice putts, obviously starting with -- was it my third hole of the day. On 10, made an eagle, holed like a 50-footer. It's always nice to get your day started like that.
Every hole after that I felt like I had birdie putts, makeable ones, and I made a few coming in.
Q. Thomas, for you, you've obviously been in here now, not your first time in here this week, but to know that you're setting yourself up tomorrow in the final group, what kind of confidence does that give you?
THOMAS DETRY: A lot. I was second-to-final group, I think, in Saudi so I felt like I learned a lot from it. I played with Jon, as well, so it was nice to be paired with him, and I'm going to be paired with him, I think, again tomorrow. My game, I've been playing some really good golf. Only two bogeys in the last three days. My game is in a really good spot, and I hope that I can keep it up for tomorrow, definitely.
Q. You are teammates. On the team side it's pretty bunched up near the top there. Entering Sunday, how does it feel with 4Aces where you are, knowing there's multiple titles at stake here?
THOMAS PIETERS: Yeah, if one of us gets it done tomorrow, and then hopefully have our first team win. I haven't won with the Aces yet, so that would be amazing.
THOMAS DETRY: Where do I start? Yeah, to be honest, this is only my third event, so when I joined, obviously I didn't realize how fun the team aspect was. I never thought that I would be playing on a golf course and looking at a scoreboard and seeing what my teammates would be doing. I thought I was just going to do my own thing.
It really is an aspect of LIV Golf, and it's pretty cool.
This week we were a couple back, and it's really nice to see, obviously, Thomas shooting 9-under, AK came back with a nice score, as well. Dustin was sick, but he's fighting to try to bring his score back, as well. So you see all the guys sort of fighting to bring the team on top of the leaderboard. It's nice to see the 4Aces on top. Really cool.
Q. DT, obviously there's a lot of scoreboard pressure coming up. You kind of have Jon Rahm on your heels and you're always having to check who's lurking behind. Is that a concern, hitting into your line while you're playing?
THOMAS DETRY: I don't think it's much of a concern what's behind. I think with the course being still a little bit soft from all the rain, I think there's only one rule for tomorrow, and it's to make as many birdies as we can. All the par-5s are reachable, there's loads of wedges in your hand. I think whoever is going to be a bit hot on the putting green and hit loads of fairways will definitely have a very good chance of winning.
Yeah, I expect some guys even behind us to shoot pretty low, as well. I think we just have to make birdies. That's it, really.
Q. What would a win mean for you, for both of you?
THOMAS DETRY: I mean, it would mean a lot. I got my first professional individual win a year ago, so I haven't won in a year, and it was such an amazing experience. I would loaf to repeat that experience on the main stage, as well. I put myself in position in Saudi, and it didn't work out. But hopefully I'm going to do my best tomorrow.
THOMAS PIETERS: A win would be amazing.
Q. I know we spoke about this yesterday, but it's pretty interesting that you and Rahm are going to be in the final group there considering all that's happened in the past five days or so. Is it almost like poetic to a certain degree?
THOMAS DETRY: Well, if it wasn't for him, I don't think I'd be here. It's in a way a little bit funny that way.
But listen, we're both competitors, and he's done it for his teammates. He's done it for the league. It's amazing what he did, and he's a good friend of mine, as well. We've played a lot of golf as juniors and on the PGA TOUR and everywhere together and out here now. I think we're just going to have a nice competitive fun round tomorrow, and we'll see who prevails.
Q. For both of you, when you're in the team room, how often, if any, do you speak Dutch, and do you kind of throw off DJ and AK when you want to, if you want to speak Dutch together?
THOMAS PIETERS: No, not at the team table. Usually when it's just the two of us, yeah, it's just easier.
THOMAS DETRY: It feels more natural when we speak Dutch because it's what we've been doing for the last 20 years, so it makes more sense to us when we speak Dutch.
THOMAS PIETERS: 33 years, dude. For the last 33 years.
THOMAS DETRY: Yeah, 33, you're right. Yeah, 33.
Q. Pieters, with the way you played today, do you feel like you're in kind of a flow state when you're playing like that? What about that is so hard to repeat in golf? It feels so easy and the next day it could feel so hard.
THOMAS PIETERS: Yeah, trust me, there's still doubt in your head every time you hit a shot, but you've got to just let that be there and execute. I just love it when it's windy because I like to flight my ball, and I always feel like I play better or I have a better chance than the field when it's windy. So I really enjoyed it today.
Q. Detry, you've been in positions where you've chased down a lead on a Sunday, but you also had a seven-shot victory on the PGA TOUR. You've been in both positions. What's the difference of the mindset when you're playing in kind of a chaser mode and getting as many birdies as possible in that mode when you're looking to protect the lead?
THOMAS DETRY: It's a good question. I've only won two tournaments in my life as an individual, and I won one by 12 and one by seven. I guess I've never really won from chasing from behind. I was both times pretty much ahead and kept going. I don't know. My mentality is just to -- it sounds cliche, but just stick to every single shot.
I think out here you can make birdies from the fairway. It starts on the tee box, and just really keep the focus. The course doesn't -- it's fairly wide at some points, but if you're still not paying enough attention, you can just miss it right, being in the right rough, and then suddenly the wet shot becomes a bit trickier.
I think it starts on the tee box and being full focus on 18 holes for four hours. I think that's going to be the goal for tomorrow, just keep that concentration for a long time.
Q. Detry, you had a perfect shot on the tee box on the 18th, on the fairway. What went wrong on the second shot?
THOMAS DETRY: What went wrong? Not many. It got a little bit colder. You could definitely feel the temperatures going down a little bit and the wind was still kind of swirling around into us, elevated tee shot. I was just in between two shots. There's nothing for sure with that flag. Short, you're either in the bunker plugged or in the water. So yeah, I was just trying to hit a little soft 7-iron and it came off a little bit stronger than I thought. It was a great shot. It just came a little bit too strong off the face.
I guess it wasn't that bad of a miss because I got it up-and-down, so it was a good 4 in the end, and I made a good putt.
