Postgame Press Conference
USA - 15, Brazil - 5
Q. The pitcher you faced in the second inning, Contreras, he's 17 years old. I know you only saw three pitches. I am not going to ask you about his stuff. How impressive is it that a 17-year-old can come into this environment and do what he did and get four outs and face the kind of lineup that you guys have?
AARON JUDGE: Impressive. I know I wasn't do that at that age. That's for sure. Just great stuff. I know he had some poise on the mound. He's throwing up to 100 miles an hour. He's facing Team USA, a lot of guys he has seen on TV or different things like that.
It was just impressive, impressive just seeing him control himself out there and get out of a big jam. And he had some good stuff.
Q. First of all congratulations for the win. USA won. Earlier today Mexico won. One of the biggest match ups in the pool for WBC is Mexico against the USA. What are your thoughts about this game and next Monday?
AARON JUDGE: We can't wait. The boys are pumped up. But we've got to go one game at a time here. We took care of business with Brazil to start. Now it is on to the next.
I know people are definitely looking forward to the U.S.-Mexico game because they have a fantastic team over there. But we have to take it one game at a time. And when they are next for us, we will lock it in for that.
Q. Mark, on Buxton, can you give us a update. He came out of the game not because of an injury?
MARK DEROSA: He got hit on the forearm. X-rays are fine. Just caught him in the meat of his forearm. I just felt 7-1 at the time, get PCA in there, get him off his feet and get him right.
Q. Earlier in the game, what did you see from Brazil? It was moving pretty well, and they turned out to be a good opponent. It just kind of, on the pitching side, what did you see that was impressive?
MARK DEROSA: I thought Logan took an inning to lock in, then he was nasty for three. He didn't have command of his off-speed early. I give credit to Manny's son for jumping on one, getting him involved.
Overall, same thing, just a couple misses off the plate. Same thing for Michael Wacha as well. He was dialed in and then missed two heaters over the heart of the plate that kept them in it.
Q. For both Brice and Aaron, this is both of your WBC debuts. Give us reaction to what that experience was like.
BRICE TURANG: This is an unbelievable experience being around these guys. Being able to compete and go play for your country, it is a dream, for sure. I am very blessed to have the opportunity to do that. And learning from these guys, and it has been amazing.
Yeah, it is really cool, and we just go out there and compete.
AARON JUDGE: It has been great. I can go back to the first inning. Bobby Witt's up there and they are chanting "USA." My heart was pounding in the on deck circle.
It was an unreal atmosphere. And looking forward to more moments like that as the tournament goes on.
We have a squad that is excited. We are gelling pretty early, which has been great. And it is time to take care of business.
Q. Another one for Mark. How easy or difficult is it to manage a team that scored 44 runs in just three games?
MARK DEROSA: I think, for me, I know these guys are going to bang. We had 17 walks today. I think it is a WBC record. We left, I believe, a small village on base. There were 12 guys left on base.
For me, the focus is on our pitching side. All of the parameters and guidelines that go into that, you find yourself counting pitches, counting innings, trying to get bullpen guys in the game, not giving them too much time off.
That's why you bring a Mason Miller in. Talked to him in the outfield today. Regardless of the score he wanted to touch the ball to keep him fresh for Mexico in two days.
Q. Talking about that Mexican game, what are your thoughts about that match?
MARK DEROSA: Respect for them. I was in this in 2023, and they woke us up in a big way. I remember Joey Meneses going multi-homer game on us.
It was a battle. Ton of respect for the way they played the game.
