Press Conference
THE MODERATOR: Welcome to the media center, our defending champion Sergio Garcia, captain of Fireballs GC. If you wouldn't mind, please take us back to this week last year; winning here in Hong Kong for what was your second individual title with LIV Golf. What made that victory so special, and what do you like about this course that suits your game?
SERGIO GARCIA: Yes. Like you said, obviously very special week last week, not only individually but as a team. We obviously also pulled a double there.
Yeah, after winning in Valderrama the year before, to do it at home and pulling the double there too, it was an amazing week. Super, super special. To be able to come here to Hong Kong, to this beautiful golf course that I've played many, many times and I've always felt like it's a kind of golf course that kind of suits me and I enjoy playing, so to be able to go and play the way I played all week but mostly on Sunday with so many guys chasing me and not making it easy, to be able to go out there and shoot, I think, a bogey-free 7-under I think it was, it obviously meant a lot.
Then to top it off also with a team victory, it made for an amazing week.
Q. Speaking of the team, the lineup is slightly refreshed this year from last year. Can you speak to the team's confidence heading into this week and share your thoughts on the Fireballs' opportunity to contend and essentially repeat?
SERGIO GARCIA: Yes, we're very excited. I think the whole team is very excited about the week. Obviously we started nicely in Riyadh. Didn't have the best week in Australia, unfortunately, but I think that the kids are excited about it.
I'm also excited about it, and we're hoping to get in a good rhythm here starting this week and hopefully start putting ourselves in contention to win more events and have a great season.
Q. I believe you've now won eight individual titles in Asia. What is it about competing in this part of the world that you feel like just suits your game and you really embrace and enjoy?
SERGIO GARCIA: I mean, I love traveling the world. I love playing golf all over the world. Asia obviously is very special. I've been coming here since I was 19 and playing different parts of Asia. I've been very fortunate to be able to win pretty much in all parts of Asia that I've been able to come and play.
It's great to be able to show what I and the Fireballs can do all around the world. We know how excited the people, the Asian people get when we come around here and how much they love the game of golf. It's great to be able to come and display what we can do here.
Q. In terms of Asia and LIV Golf's growth around the world, it's certainly the world's golf league. How important do you think this part of the world and Asia and growing the sport here is to LIV and the International Series and the footprint that it's begun to establish in growing the sport?
SERGIO GARCIA: Yes, it's crucial. Not only Asia but the whole world. That's what we are. We're a global league. We love to promote the game of golf and ourselves and our teams everywhere we go in the world. We're excited to go to South Africa in a couple weeks.
Obviously, like I said earlier, Riyadh three weeks or four weeks ago, and Australia and obviously Singapore next week and then we go to Korea and Spain.
We are a global league. We love to promote the game that we love as much as we can all around the world. It's very exciting to see the demand that we have all over the world. I think people get super excited about the opportunity to watch us play live and being able to watch so many great players in that particular week, and it shows every week.
I think that the league and the teams and ourselves individually, we're very proud to be able to do that.
Q. It's going to be a bit soft the first couple of days, it looks like, out there. Does that mean that a fast start is just as important as it ever was now that we're four rounds?
SERGIO GARCIA: Yeah, I think a fast start is always important, without a doubt. Obviously, like you said the last couple days it's rained a little bit, so the course is going to be gettable unless it gets quite windy. The good thing at the same time is that now with four rounds, maybe you don't need as fast of a start as with three rounds.
But yeah, anytime you can start strong and well and fast, like you said, it's a bonus.
Q. Could you tell us what is your most favorite things in Hong Kong that you would recommend to your friends to go to Hong Kong and try about it? It can be anything. Just name a few.
SERGIO GARCIA: Well, I mean, there's a few of them for sure. I think that Hong Kong is a very unique and great city with a lot of energy, a lot of really good restaurants, amazing restaurants. If you're a foodie it's the kind of city you want to come visit. I think it has great energy. When you go out for dinner or even if you go for a little karaoke or something like that, you can have a lot of fun, so it's great.
Some great courses. I think that everything is cramped a little bit. It's not super big. But you still have a good amount of courses. Yesterday we were doing a little corporate day for UBS, and it was another beautiful golf course that we were playing on.
It's really nice to see all those things, and I think that the culture that you can get here, that you can experience, is very nice. There's definitely a lot of things to come and enjoy while you visit.
Q. Yesterday the HSBC LIV Golf Hong Kong announced that we are going to extend one more year. It's going to be happening in February, which the weather is more stable. What's the thought to the HSBC LIV Golf Hong Kong again next year?
SERGIO GARCIA: It's great. I think anytime you can get a great sponsor, and in this case, like HSBC, to support us, to support our events, it's always a plus for us. We're very proud of that.
I think that the last couple of years we've started to see a lot more enthusiasm and sponsors being interested in coming and supporting teams and supporting events and stuff. That's something that we're very happy to see, and we hope to keep building on that.
I think that on our case and in the league's case, the most important thing is to make sure those sponsors are happy, they enjoy what they do, and they feel like they get what they want from their support.
Q. With the unpredictable weather on the weekend, how will the weather cause you to adjust your strategy?
SERGIO GARCIA: Because of the weather, no, I don't think that you adjust many things. Obviously I think that the course when it plays a little bit softer, it usually plays a little bit easier. It's a little bit easier to get to some pins that are maybe over bunkers or something like that.
But the strategy doesn't change much. At the end of the day, you're still trying to hit the right shots at the right times and give yourself as many birdie opportunities as possible. That's not going to change much at all.
You just probably have to make a couple more birdies.
Q. Regarding the teams, since you're more experienced than the rest of the team, did you share your experience here in Hong Kong about the golf course, about the weather, everything with your team? How did you share it with them?
SERGIO GARCIA: We talked a little bit about it, but all of my three teammates, they've played here at least once, all of them. Obviously Josele didn't play last year the LIV event, but he did play the Asian Tour event.
They'll know the course. They know what they have to do. But we always have chats and talk about the weeks. If anybody needs any advice from me or if I need any advice from them, we all ask each other.
Q. But you're the one to know how to win.
SERGIO GARCIA: They know how to win. They're great players. They know how to win.
