Press Conference
M. SAKKARI/I. Swiatek
2-6, 6-4, 7-5
THE MODERATOR: Iga, obviously not the result you wanted, but a highly competitive match. Just your thoughts on maybe what the difference was.
IGA SWIATEK: I don't know yet. I will need to for sure watch and analyze. For sure I could have sometimes make better decisions.
Maria also played well. She played well in defense and brought back many shots that against another player would be a winner. I did that in the first set as well, but I felt like this kind of made a difference, who was more solid, and that's it.
THE MODERATOR: Questions.
Q. You mentioned the conditions at night against Daria were not ideal. Curious, with similar circumstances tonight, if they affected you in any way.
IGA SWIATEK: No, because I adjusted with my racquets with the stringing, so it was much better in terms of that. Yeah, I struggled yesterday. I wasted a lot of energy playing with wrong racquets. Today I didn't make this mistake. From the beginning I felt like I can go for it. But yeah, for sure the quality of my game was not enough to win.
Q. Do you feel the ups and downs of this match might reflect the issue with you that things are not clicking in your game since the start of year?
IGA SWIATEK: Yeah, I mean, for sure a lot of changes of momentum, and I'm not starting well the second set. There's something, yeah, that I should change there. I don't really know why it's been like that. Honestly, sports kind of bring you different challenges, so, yeah, I will need to work on that and that's it.
Q. One of the reasons you're very difficult to beat is when you win the first set you're really, you usually win all your matches when you do that. Was it something that you noticed from Maria, how she changed her game tactically in the second and third set?
IGA SWIATEK: I would need to watch, honestly. For sure I felt like I dropped the level in second set. But I don't know about her because, yeah, I would need to watch.
Q. You spoke about watching your matches. Do you watch the entire match, or do you watch parts of it, the important parts when you're analyzing a loss?
IGA SWIATEK: Usually the entire, but sometimes if I know what I did wrong, then I don't watch at all.
Q. If I could ask about the not up call in the third set that had to be reviewed. I'm curious if you felt it was not a not up, and what you made of it when you saw it?
IGA SWIATEK: I didn't know if I, I mean, from the physics, how the ball went, it was either from the floor or I framed it. So I wasn't sure, honestly.
Q. From outside it sounds you're making maybe more mistakes than you used to be making, even on big points. Is it a question of you trying new things, like going to the net, going for more on these points, or is it something else?
IGA SWIATEK: What was the question?
Q. From outside it seems that you're making more mistakes on the big points than you used to do. Is it because you're trying different things, like going to the net or going for your shots more, or is it a confidence thing?
IGA SWIATEK: No, I think, yeah, I haven't been that solid. I went to the net today because of the wind. Like, when I was playing with the wind, the ball kind of stopped. So when I went to follow it, I was already like in the middle of the court, so I had to make a decision of going in or backing out. Yeah, I wanted to go for it, so I tried.
Q. You faced Maria last year as well, and you said yesterday that she's been playing better. What difference did you notice in her game today compared to last year?
IGA SWIATEK: Honestly, I don't really remember the last year's match, so hard for me to answer that.
