Press Conference
THE MODERATOR: Let's welcome to the room Anthony Kim. Anthony, nice round today, finished with a 5-under 67 as a new member of the 4Aces. If you'd please take us through your round.
ANTHONY KIM: I hit the ball fairly well. I wish I made a few more putts, but missed some short ones out there today, but I can get better, so just continue to get better and just keep working.
Q. After one round you're currently T3 with teammate and team captain Dustin Johnson. As a new member of the 4Aces, can you share what it feels like to be part of a team on LIV Golf?
ANTHONY KIM: I'm just one day in, but obviously I wouldn't have accepted to be on the team if I didn't like all three of the guys. I've gotten to play with Thomas now quite a bit, and just being around guys that I want to hang out with off the golf course is the reason I chose to be on a team because obviously I had an option to stay wild card.
But honored to be a part of the team, and I think as I get better, the team will have more chances to win.
Q. Seemed like there were some tricky conditions out there maybe with the wind. What was your assessment of this course, of the conditions today, and as you begin to think about how you're going to approach it tomorrow?
ANTHONY KIM: Yeah, it was definitely tricky. Sometimes the wind switches a little bit. We played one hole opposite -- it was downwind, and then the next hole was downwind. You have to keep an eye on it, but my caddie did a good job, and I just hit it where he tells me, and if I do a good job, we're going to have lots of chances for birdie.
Q. AK, do you think joining a team will help accelerate anything, especially maybe from a support standpoint? You'll be able to lean on a lot more people now, I would assume?
ANTHONY KIM: Yeah. I mean, certainly being around those guys that I like, I'll enjoy my time more. But I enjoy my time with my daughter and my wife. I don't need more support than that. But to have some extra guys that I like being around is going to be very helpful.
Q. I assume that because you've found some form that you may have -- your expectation level may be a little bit higher now than say maybe six months ago; would that be correct?
ANTHONY KIM: I think I'm delusional enough that my expectations were the same today as they were two years ago. But now I'm actually able to produce some of the good shots.
I've been working hard, and it's nice to see rounds like today where they could have been much lower, but it was still solid and on a tricky day.
I think I have a lot of opportunity in front of me, and if I just keep working, I don't see why I can't be contending on Sundays.
Q. How do you feel about wearing that Aces apparel? Was there a moment where you had to get used to it?
ANTHONY KIM: I'm still getting used to it.
Q. Is that the best you've played in the last couple years? You said you missed a couple putts early, but you're driving the ball great and rode a bit of momentum after a nice 12-foot save on the 2nd, which was your fifth hole. Is that the best you've played in the last couple years?
ANTHONY KIM: It's all a blur. I don't know. It definitely was a good ball-striking round. But I've had other rounds where I scored better and I played better, but I've just got to put four together now.
I've had spurts where I've had good rounds, but it's disappointing not to convert the shorter ones, but I know I'll get there, and just got to keep working.
Q. Do you have goals for this year? It's one round and it's a Thursday of the tourney, but it must give you a good feeling going forward, and what are your goals for this year?
ANTHONY KIM: My goals are the same as they were when I first joined LIV. It's to get 1 percent better every day, stay sober, enjoy time with my family, and whatever happens happens because all I can do is try my best.
Q. Do you ever feel like when you're walking around here now that you're a 40-year-old man that there are shades of the 22-year-old? You were a Ryder Cup man, close there in the Masters, was on the way up early on. Do you still feel like that young bloke is there in you?
ANTHONY KIM: You were right, it was a roller coaster. But I think what I'm doing better is using my experience and my age to my advantage on the golf course. I'm more patient out there. Do I want to break 12 clubs some rounds? Absolutely. But I'm focusing on the next shot.
People told me in my early 20s that that's what I should be doing, and I don't know if it was arrogance or confidence that I didn't want to listen. But I'm playing smarter. I'm staying more patient. I really want nothing to do with that 20-something-year-old kid. I want to be right where I am.
I'm very blessed to have an amazing family and be alive. This is awesome.
