Crushers GC
Press Conference
THE MODERATOR: Welcome to the stage, Bryson DeChambeau, captain of Crushers GC. Bryson, you finished today 6-under 66. Please just tell us about your round today.
BRYSON DeCHAMBEAU: Yeah, it was a tough battle out there. First three holes, played really solid. Almost made a putt on 1; good par on 2; 3, good par, made a six-footer; 4, got a little unfortunate. Felt like things weren't going my way, and I kept talking to my caddie G-Bo and I'm like, I don't know how these past couple weeks, I'm hitting it really well but just not scoring. He's just like, stay patient. You've got to stay patient with this game.
That's what I did today. I kept staying patient. I knew the back nine was gettable if I just hit some good wedges. Fortunately I was able to do that, and didn't capitalize on a couple areas, but 6-under out here with these conditions, I'll take that any day.
Q. Bryson, can you take us through the 10th hole?
BRYSON DeCHAMBEAU: Oh, yeah, it was a great line drive into the tee box and bounced it off the cart path. I had a nice scuff mark. Some kid has a nice scuff marked ball out there. Then it was a perfect 287-yard 3-wood to 27 feet, and nice two-putt for birdie. What else is there?
Q. When was the last time you --
BRYSON DeCHAMBEAU: Last time I did that was 2021 PLAYERS Championship off the 4th tee box and it cost me THE PLAYERS. I've done it before. But that shot was more of a thin shot. I just hit too far down on the ball. I actually struck it nicely. It was a perfect strike right into the tee box. It was awesome.
Got to make sure I don't hit it with too negative an attack angle next time.
Q. Bryson, you mentioned the patience today. Is that going to be the key the next three days with the weather turning a bit foul and hot and the course is going to get tougher?
BRYSON DeCHAMBEAU: I think that's the case with any tournament. AK was just up here, and he's 40 years old now. It was just really cool actually -- not as a digression or whatnot, but it was really cool to see him, somebody that's had a lot of difficulties change his life around, come back out here and having the success that he's had, it's really cool to hear somebody like that say, even when he's been through so much trouble. He's eight years older than me, to still say, look, it's about patience and whatnot. It doesn't matter where you are.
Yeah, it's going to be all about patience for the next few days, the next three days. I think with any golf course you have to have patience. But that is the key in my opinion for any type of golf you play, especially at the elite level because you're going to get some weird stuff happening to you.
I'll give you an example. On 9 I hit a great drive, great second shot, and the wind started pushing the ball off the right, and it went into this little tree well, and I'm like, I didn't deserve that. But it happens. Then I top a drive on the next hole, and it's like, what is going on. I feel like I'm playing great shooting 3- or 4-under.
I don't know, it was just a weird deal. You just stay patient, you start executing golf shots like that on 11, where I had missed it to the right in previous years and just being a little more patient and saying, look, I've got to play a lower-flighted shot in there and run it back to the flag, those decisions make up the difference when playing tough golf courses. So that was really nice to see.
