THE MODERATOR: We'll start with our first two members of The Bay Golf Club, getting the first win of the season. Min, what does that mean for you guys to kind of get that momentum going, and also just comments on the two young guns. You're suddenly the old guy on the team now.
MIN WOO LEE: Yeah, I got plenty of that in the interview. Yes, I'm the vet. Showed just that experience over the last year or so, what to expect at a TGL tournament.
No, it was good fun. These guys brought the energy, which we needed. Looking at that leaderboard, it wasn't great. To get points and the win, it was very special and needed.
Superstar of the show here. Very good shots from the boys. I think, yeah, very clutch throughout the whole night. It was fun to be a part of it.
Q. We've got to ask you about the hole-in-one. Just take us through it, and also, when was the last hole-in-one? Start with the shot at SoFi Center tonight.
NEAL SHIPLEY: Yeah, I hit that shot in practice a bunch and I think I missed the green five or six times in a row, so I think the boys were a little nervous about it, and I was, too.
We aimed a little right of the pin and I tugged it a hair but right on top of it, and it went in, and it was pandemonium after that. Just went crazy.
Q. You thought maybe it hit the camera?
NEAL SHIPLEY: Yeah, it hit something up there and something fell down. I think it just nailed a camera or lens. I don't know if someone can confirm that or not.
Q. Luke, just talk through your reaction.
LUKE CLANTON: Yeah, I think you saw my reaction. It was pretty good. No, it was just cool. The whole experience of being out there and being in front of all those people in a stadium like this, I've never done it, so it's so cool to be there, and to see Neal jumping there after the hole-in-one and me there with him, it's cool. We were always playing against each other and all that, and to be able to root for each other was really cool.
Q. Neal, I wanted to ask a little bit more about the hole-in-one. What club was it, and was the thought to hit it beyond the pin the entire time?
NEAL SHIPLEY: Definitely not trying to hit behind that pin. If it would have flown a couple more yards, it would have been a really hard up-and-down. Definitely juiced it a hair.
It was a sand wedge, so just trying to -- it was something we were trying to maybe flight in there, take a little spin off, but kind of juiced it and spun it more.
Q. Luke and Neal, you guys both played college golf. How did it feel to be back playing in that team environment tonight?
NEAL SHIPLEY: It was great. It's a little different, you're so used to playing for yourself, and when you're playing for something bigger than yourself, I think it's always so cool. Being able to root for the guys next to you is just great.
This is definitely a little different than college golf, too, because we get to watch the shots in college and you get to hear the stories at the end of the round, so it was really cool to be there rooting Luke and Min Woo on just right there in front of you. It's pretty sweet.
LUKE CLANTON: What he said exactly. Yeah, it was just so cool, just to see everything happening with all the people. Obviously the hole-in-one was great, but I think throughout the whole night, we did really good. To get 11 points and win that last hole was great. As Min Woo was saying, we were trying to move up that leaderboard, and it was great.
Q. Luke, the last 12 months have been crazy for you. You rack up the accomplishments, the life memories, of course earn the TOUR card right down the road at the Cognizant, competing in the first-of-its-kind Optum Golf Channel Games down the road, and now making your debut at the SoFi Center. How would you describe your last calendar year?
LUKE CLANTON: Nuts. I can't even describe what it's been like. A year and a half ago I was in college playing FIFA with my buddies, and now we're playing TGL in front of everybody. It's just so cool.
Obviously I think you kind of keep grinding, grinding, grinding and you don't really lift your head up too much to realize what you're doing. I was actually in the locker room before we went out and played, and I was just like, this is the coolest moment ever, just to be out, be able to play with these guys in front of those people and perform pretty well. It was awesome.
Q. Going back to the hole-in-one, what is the play-by-play in your head, the thought process, reactions?
NEAL SHIPLEY: Well, I knew I hit a pretty solid shot and I thought it was a good number. When it landed behind the pin and it was flying and landing I'm like, oh, geez, don't go over. I thought I kind of juiced it. As it spun and went right to the hole, just dead tracking, I was like -- it was pretty sick. I knew it was in about one foot out. It was amazing. We went bananas. I was like, I've got to throw the club.
I promised some of my friends at home that I'd take my shirt off if I made an ace, but I just couldn't hold up that promise; I'm sorry, boys. But it was a great, really cool experience.
Q. Min Woo, what was it like to be in the leadership role tonight with these young guns?
MIN WOO LEE: Yeah, it doesn't happen often. That's two moments in the last couple days, even on Sunday at Phoenix Open, I played with Chris Gotterup and Pierceson Coody and I was the vet of the group, and that doesn't normally happen.
No, it was good to see a little bit of experience from just the last year or so playing in the TGL. There was a couple moments there where you rush into shots and you don't use a time-out perfectly. I was just there to help the boys, and they just showed up and played some good golf.
Q. Min Woo, as the vet of the group, how important do you feel momentum is in TGL, and right now with this win, do you guys feel like you have it now?
MIN WOO LEE: Yeah, no, it's amazing. Again, I looked at that leaderboard and we have so much more potential than being at the bottom with not many holes won.
We needed something to happen. I'm happy for the boys to come and support us and do very well. That's why we did bring these boys on the team.
Yeah, hopefully we can keep it going. Momentum in sport is a massive deal, and it's very -- especially in a TGL match. Today we were on top most of the time. Last week we were just getting crushed. It's so hard. You try to keep the happiness and try to keep the spirits high, but when things just don't go your way, it's tough. It was nice to be on the other side of it this week, and yeah, win against a very good team.
Q. I want to ask each of you guys, does that count as a career hole-in-one?
NEAL SHIPLEY: 100 percent.
MIN WOO LEE: The celebration definitely --
NEAL SHIPLEY: No doubt. I think so. I'm going to count it. That's better than a hole-in-one, man.
MIN WOO LEE: Good moment in life, yeah.
Q. Neal and Luke, I'm curious about your preparatory efforts to get used to the music and the lights and the sound. How did your prep work go for tonight?
LUKE CLANTON: I actually came in here on Friday and was practicing a little bit. Yeah, it was just different, but if you hit a good golf shot it's going to turn out okay. You kind of have to put that in your mind even though you're looking at a screen 50 yards away from you, it's a little difficult, but again, it was so much fun. We kind of figured out where the starting lines were in the putting and chipping and everything, and I think the preparation was good. I didn't do a lot but I did enough, and I think it was good.
NEAL SHIPLEY: Yeah, same. I came in yesterday -- this morning, and I also came in a couple weeks ago just to hit some shots. It's not like two crazy different.
When you're out there in competition, I feel like -- I started hitting a couple shots that went a little far, especially some of the shorter clubs it's kind of easy to juice your wedges out there just because you've got some adrenaline going.
But it's just golf, and even though we're hitting into a screen and have a spinning green, it's pretty cool.
Q. Neal, the 14th hole is actually what won it; could you take us through the putt that won the match?
NEAL SHIPLEY: Yeah, yeah. So from just off the green, I felt like I had a good beat on it, and the boys kind of confirmed my read. It was about maybe a cup out left or so, maybe a little more.
I was just -- we threw the hammer because we knew they couldn't deny it. They had to accept it if they wanted to have a chance to win.
My main focus was just hitting it with good pace, make sure I didn't run it four or five feet by and give them a chance. Hit it with some great pace and got it to sneak in that left edge.
Q. How many hole-in-ones is that lifetime?
NEAL SHIPLEY: That's fourth lifetime. I had one in November in Japan. That was my last one. So we've been on a little bit of a roll recently.
