AFRICA AMATEUR CHAMPIONSHIP

February 6, 2026

Jack Buchanan

Johannesburg, Gauteng, South Africa

Quick Quotes

Q. You had a great start to the round today. You had birdie on the 1st and then an eagle on the 8th. Can you talk me through that a little bit?

JACK BUCHANAN: Yeah, got off to a nice start. A few birdies early on, and then the eagle on 8 to get the round 5-under. Very nice start; nothing more you could have asked for.

Then just kind of made a lot of pars on the back nine with the odd bogey on I think it was 13, but finished with a birdie on 18 to cancel that one out.

Q. Winning tomorrow gives you exemptions into amateur and professional championships, including the Open at Royal Birkdale. What would that mean to you?

JACK BUCHANAN: Yeah, it's still 24 hours away, so obviously it's in the back of your mind, but it's still a long way away. You could go into the last day with a 20-shot lead, and it could still not be enough, so just going to try going into tomorrow with the same kind of plan that I have been going into the last three days and see where things go from there.

Q. Talk to me a little bit about what happens now. What's your plan for this evening just to get ready for tomorrow?

JACK BUCHANAN: Yeah, definitely go get a nice ice-cold towel and go towel myself off. It's been quite warm out there today. Get some lunch, and just normal recovery stuff that I've been doing since I basically got to college a year and a half ago. Early night, and lots of water and sodium and stuff like that.

Q. With a four-shot lead, do you think you can afford to be a little bit more conservative tomorrow, or are you going to go out as you have been the past couple of days?

JACK BUCHANAN: Honestly didn't even know what the lead was, but just trying to make a lot of pars out there, as much as I can, and the par-5s that are reachable in two, try and capitalize on those.
