Matt Fitzpatrick

TPC Scottsdale

Quick Quotes

Q. Matt, opened up with that 29 on your front, then 65 was it for the round. Excellent play today. Just get some comments on your opener.

MATT FITZPATRICK: Yeah, it was a bit of a scrappy start. Played the first hole well; kind of scrambled to make a birdie; chipped in on my second hole.

Then just struggled a little bit off the tee. Just didn't quite kind of find the rhythm with the driver, and then I hit a good tee shot on 15 and I was kind of a way off the tee there? I felt like.

Obviously kicked on, made some really good putts, hit my irons well. Was just doing everything pretty solid. I think I could argue I actually played better on my back nine than my front nine to be honest. Felt like I gave myself a few more mid-range putts to make birdies and just didn't quite make them.

Q. To have such a great score and finish bogey, bogey, how does that register with you mentally, how you process your day?

MATT FITZPATRICK: Yeah, it's disappointing. I guess the way you got to look at it is if I started bogey, bogey and you finish 6-under you come off feeling like the greatest player in the world. You got to try and reframe it I guess there.

If someone would've said here is 6-under to start day and I can stay in bed, I would've snatched your hand off.

I'm in a good position to start with and hopefully kick on.

Q. Do you think there is any advantage to getting out here early before fans are too lost in the sauce?

MATT FITZPATRICK: No. I don't think there is any advantage there. Realistically, it's two, three holes that will you might get a bit of abuse on, but it's all good fun. I love this week. I played it for the last I think it's my fifth time, so always happy to be here.

Q. (No microphone.) How were you able to settle into a rhythm?

MATT FITZPATRICK: Yeah, you know, it's just another week. We're used to it now. We played so many of these. I played so many tournaments. This is my 11th season as a professional, so outside of like I say, the two, three holes, it's not really much out of the ordinary for us.

Just a case of getting on with it and trying to stay as focused as you can.
