AUSTRALIAN OPEN

January 22, 2026

Wang Xinyu

Melbourne, Victoria, Australia

Press Conference

W. XINYU/J. Ostapenko

4-6, 6-4, 6-4

THE MODERATOR: Close match out there today, but you must be happy to get the win.

WANG XINYU: Yeah, I mean, she is really tough to play, I mean, when she's playing her tennis. I mean, it's just, yeah, when she was finding her rhythm and then -- when she found her rhythm, sorry, and it's really tough to play a player who plays aggressive as her.

I'm just happy that I hang in there, like, on those important moments. Yeah, I would like to say it's a match that gives you a lot of confidence once you get through it. I'm really happy that I've done it today, and I'm really looking forward for the next round.

THE MODERATOR: Questions.

Q. So you talked about her aggressive play style. Especially, when you're down a set at 2-4, how do you combat that, or how do you counter that essentially?

WANG XINYU: Yeah, I mean, she got the break first in the second set, I remember, and there were actually a lot of breaks there. So, yeah, I think that kind of helped me.

So I wasn't getting too upset, you know, because we had -- at some point I think nobody could hold serve, so I was, like, okay. Then if she's being so aggressive, then what I can do is just put one more shot back.

Then, yeah, waiting for my chance to attack.

Q. Talking about your serve today, I'm looking at the stats here. Six aces, and you won about 65% of the points on your first serve if they went in. Just talk about the importance of that first serve and using it as a key to victory today.

WANG XINYU: Yeah, definitely. I think, like, first serves and also when I get, like, her second serves, I think that helps me to start the point, like, more aggressive.

I think that's definitely one of the key of winning against her. You know, you got to be more aggressive first. Otherwise, when we get into rallies, it's really -- she's really tough to play.

Q. So far you've had a pretty strong start to the season. Going to the final in Auckland and in the third round here. Just talk about how much confidence you're building, especially at the end of last year where you were kind of losing a little bit early in tournaments.

WANG XINYU: Yeah, I think most importantly is the work we've put in, you know, through preseason and also throughout, like, the start of the season. Then we are still working on things every day, you know, trying to improve and not just for the results, not just looking at the results, but to improve as a player, like, to becoming a better player.

I think definitely getting through tough matches. Beginning of the year also in Auckland, I've had some really tough matches. Also, in Hobart and coming in here, that gave me a lot of confidence.

Q. What were you working on in the offseason, and how have you seen that translate to this year so far?

WANG XINYU: Yeah, I mean, I think you just have more time to work on stuff, like, during offseason, because during the season, it's always, like, okay, but we have tournament coming, like, in the next week or in ten days.

Then in preseason you can really work on, like, technical stuff and with the techniques. Yeah, I'm really happy that I was healthy, you know, during the whole time so we could really work on things.

Q. Your next matchup will be against Linda Noskova, your second seeded opponent here. What do you think about the matchup for a spot in the final 16?

WANG XINYU: I think it definitely is not going to get any slower (laughter). She plays super fast. I think, yeah, she likes the conditions here, for sure.

So, yeah, I'm just going to, like I said, try my best to be aggressive first and to attack first, and I think that's where my strength at.

So, yeah, just going to go for my shots.
