Press Conference
M. INGLIS/L. Siegemund
6-4, 6-7, 7-6
THE MODERATOR: Maddie, the last two matches, how pleased are you with your resilience and performance getting into the next round of the Australian Open?
MADDISON INGLIS: Yeah, it's a bit crazy. I can't really believe it yet. But, yeah, there have been some long and tough matches. I actually didn't know I had that in me at the moment.
Yeah, it's crazy once you get out there, once you get playing. You want it so bad, it's crazy what you can do. Yeah, I'm so happy.
THE MODERATOR: Questions, please.
Q. Was it your best win ever today? How do you feel emotionally after all that?
MADDISON INGLIS: Uhm, yeah, I mean, I honestly haven't had a second to really think about it. But yeah, maybe ranking-wise. Oh, no, it's not. Actually, I had a really good win here a few years ago against Leylah Fernandez.
Yeah, it was an amazing win against a really tough competitor. Yeah, I'm stoked. I can't believe I'm back in the third round.
Q. How are you feeling coming into this tournament? You said on court you couldn't have expected this. Then you went match point down in the first round of quallies.
MADDISON INGLIS: Crazy, yeah. I thought about that actually the last couple of matches. I kind of have a second chance. Yeah, I was really lucky to get through that first match. Yeah, tennis is so crazy sometimes.
Yeah, I just kind of kept fighting. Everyone around me said, Keep believing and just back yourself. Yeah, they really helped me get to this stage.
Q. You mentioned before that the crowd gave you the energy you didn't know you had. What was it like feeling that home crowd support?
MADDISON INGLIS: Yeah, it was amazing. As soon as I walked out there, it was full. I know it's such an electric court, but I was not expecting that many people to be there for my match.
But yeah, so grateful that I got to play out there. To have everyone's support was incredible. Especially in the third when you're nervous, and tired, it was almost three hours I think.
Yeah, they just gave me that energy in the end to finish it off. So yeah, very grateful.
Q. The end of the match, your reaction, the disbelief, the joy, can you compare it to a few years ago when you made the same stage? Is it because of how tough tennis is, the ups and downs, not expecting this, is it that bundle of things that make you react that way?
MADDISON INGLIS: Yeah, no, I mean, tennis is brutal. You have some incredible moments and some really, really hard ones. Yeah, I haven't been in main draw of a Grand Slam for a long time. To be in a Grand Slam, in Melbourne, like, it's my favorite tournament. My family's here. Jason was right there.
Yeah, to be able to share these wins with them is, like, crazy. It's so special. So yeah, lots of emotion after. Yeah, I'm just so excited I get to play another match here. It's awesome.
Q. Do these moments keep you going?
MADDISON INGLIS: Yeah. I haven't been able to crack the top hundred yet. I had some really good results last year. But you do, you know, have those doubts naturally.
But yeah, seeing the tennis I've played this week, and the way I can kind of compose myself in those big moments is really cool. So I'm really proud of that. I'll take it into the rest of the year.
Q. Can you talk us through your mindset during the 10-point tiebreak.
MADDISON INGLIS: Yes (smiling). I mean, anything can happen in 10 pointers. I just tried to focus on one point at a time. I got a good lead, which was great. I had a little bit of a buffer if I got a little bit nervous at the end.
But yeah, I was really proud how I managed myself in the tiebreak. I wanted it so bad. I was nervous. She would have been nervous, too. I knew she wasn't going to give it to me, she's such a great competitor.
Yeah, I had to work for it. I'm really grateful it went my way.
Q. Naomi has just gone on court. What do you make of the prospect of playing her next? Do you have some spectacular outfit planned?
MADDISON INGLIS: Definitely not (smiling). I'll just be wearing the same thing.
Q. The excitement of playing her potentially.
MADDISON INGLIS: Yeah, we'll see how that match goes. But both of those girls are awesome competitors and great tennis players. It will be a tough match.
But yeah, right now I'm going to soak it all in. You're not in the third round of a Grand Slam every day. Yeah, I'll enjoy tonight. Get out on the mixed court with Jason tomorrow. That will be fun. I'm stoked I get to play again.
Q. Going into the next match, you're so elated now, so excited and happy, what do you do to not get over-excited or even suffer a letdown going into the next round?
MADDISON INGLIS: Yeah, it is hard 'cause these matches, they're really taxing. I am feeling a bit tired right now. I have tomorrow to kind of recover and have a bit of a chill day after mixed.
But yeah, I really want to enjoy these moments. I will enjoy it with my family tonight. Yeah, I mean, the job's not done yet. I'll lock back in on Saturday. Yeah, I'm really excited for it.
Q. What are you posting on Insta? Did you get her done properly?
MADDISON INGLIS: Oh, yeah, the other day (smiling).
I've just been reposting what Australian Open has been posting 'cause they've been awesome videos. Yeah, maybe at the end of the tournament I'll do a little something.
Q. How are you balancing the singles and the mixed tournaments? Are they different pressures, strains?
MADDISON INGLIS: Yeah, it has been a little bit tough just because the matches have been long and physical, and also late. The one against Kim, I didn't get to bed until 4 a.m. I was definitely a little bit tired from my doubles match yesterday.
Yeah, it is what it is. It's not every day you get to play in the Australian Open. So yeah, I'm just enjoying every moment out on court whether it's doubles or mixed. I'm super grateful to Tennis Australia for giving me the opportunity to play it.
Mixed with Jason will be really fun. Doubles with Destanee was awesome, yeah. Just enjoying it.
Q. On the next round, if it is Osaka, like that it screams it should be on Rod Laver, how exciting would that be to play there?
MADDISON INGLIS: Yeah, that would be cool. I was lucky to play -- I think I played there once a few years ago in the third round. Also the year before that against Kenin. I've had some experience out there, which will really help me.
But yeah, it's like one of the biggest courts in tennis. It will be pretty crazy to go out there and play, but also so exciting. So yeah, that will be awesome.
Q. Who takes the lead in the mixed, you or Jason?
MADDISON INGLIS: Hopefully Jason. I think that's what the guy is meant to do.
No, but he's an awesome doubles player, so I'm excited to play with him. I think he's about to go on court, actually, against the Special Ks. So That will be exciting to watch.
But yeah, we'll have some fun. It's not every day you get to play mixed at a Grand Slam with your fiancé. I'm really looking forward to it.
Thanks.
