AUSTRALIAN OPEN

January 24, 2026

Wang Xinyu

Melbourne, Victoria, Australia

Press Conference

W. XINYU/L. Noskova

7-5, 6-4

THE MODERATOR: Congratulations on your win today. Do you want to start by talking us through the match and how it was particularly in those warm conditions?

WANG XINYU: Yeah, it's like I said at the post-match interview, it's a tough day today at the office, you know. I came here at 10:00 a.m. and then here we are.

You know, yeah, it's not easy to play today, and especially against Linda. She's such aggressive player. Yeah, she's giving me a lot of pressure from that return and serve-plus-one shots.

Yeah, I'm just happy that how I find a way, like, throughout the match and then, yeah, how I managed to get through today.

THE MODERATOR: Questions.

Q. You said you got here at 10:00 a.m. and the delay. Did you expect that that was going to happen? I know you started off and it went to 2-2, and then the delay happened. Did you expect it, and what did you do during it?

WANG XINYU: Yeah, you know, we were, like, okay, maybe if the match before us, if they can go fast, you know, maybe there's a chance we could finish it before the heat, but then, like, when we were waiting and we just watched -- we have, like, a scale from 1 to 5, and it slowly one from 1.5, 2, 3, 4.5. Then I think when we walk on, it was, like, 4.7 already. So I was, like, yeah, we will try our best, but most likely we cannot finish the match, yeah.

Q. During the delay, what did you do to kind of stay focused and, I guess, stay just match-fit?

WANG XINYU: I mean, it's too long to stay focused (laughter). You know, I went back. I took off the tapes, made myself cup of teas, and then, yeah, had some food, and then retape again. That's it.

Q. So this is your furthest run at the Australian Open, which I'm sure you're obviously super excited for. Can you reflect on the run you've had so far? Obviously it's not over yet, but just talk about your progress here at the AO.

WANG XINYU: Yeah, I'm super happy with the result this year. You know, Australia, it's been a tough one for me, because, like I said before, the fast court and fast speed condition here used to be a little bit more tricky for me.

Yeah, I'm just happy with the work with it and the improvement I got. Yeah, I'm just really happy to get through to the next round.

Q. In rallies that were longer than nine shots back and forth, you won eight of the nine points. Is there something about that that you work on, working longer rallies, or is that a coincidence, per se?

WANG XINYU: I don't know how I did it, to be honest (laughter). I mean, her ball is, like, super flat. So, yeah, I mean, before I went on the match, and Allen told me and also, like, my team, they kind of told me, you know, just to stay a bit more flat in the rally.

You know, it's because her ball is really tough to spin it. Also, with the conditions like today, you know, balls, they just flying everywhere.

Yeah, I mean, I was just trying to stay one more shot in the rally and trying to get my shots, you know, like, deeper. That's it.

Q. Do you know who you play in the next round?

WANG XINYU: Yeah, I think so. I'm playing --

Q. Amanda Anisimova. Similar kind of hitter to Linda. Do you feel like playing Linda is good preparation maybe for playing Amanda?

WANG XINYU: Yeah, I mean, I kind of feel like all the players I played here, they're all playing super fast. Yeah, it's not easy to play them here on these fast courts.

Yeah, Amanda, I think she's been playing really well. You know, making to finals last year, and also I've seen her play here, like, few games here and there. Yeah, I kind of know what to expect.

Yeah, I will try my best. I think when I'm playing my tennis, when I'm able to, you know, like, put pressure first, and I think that's where I'm going to... yeah.

Q. Just going back to the match today, obviously as you described it, the time you took to the court, it seemed pretty obvious that the match would be suspended pretty soon. Would it have been better for you if the match just hadn't started, given that the suspension was inevitable? Would that have been easier to deal with?

WANG XINYU: No, I don't really think about it that way. I'm more, like, you know, if it happens, then, yeah, it's maybe better for me, you know, just to go out there, play a few games, get used to the conditions, and yeah.
