Melbourne, Victoria, Australia
Press Conference
A. ANISIMOVA/Wang Xinyu
7-6, 6-4
THE MODERATOR: Obviously a tough fight out there today. Can you just give us your thoughts on your performance and then just the match in general.
WANG XINYU: Yeah, I mean, she's really tough to play. I'm happy with how I played today, like, overall. You know, she was serving good. I think we both did.
You know, first set it was just when you get to the tiebreak, it's just a point here and there. But I think overall, I'm really happy with how I stayed aggressive on court today.
Yeah, I think this week has been amazing for me.
THE MODERATOR: Questions.
Q. Obviously the score was very close, and it came down to the tiebreak in the first set. What did you think gave her the edge in that tiebreak?
WANG XINYU: I think she was just very consistent and accurate with her first serves. Yeah, that didn't give me a lot of chance to really attack and put pressure on her on the return, but then she was able to do it.
I think she really stepped up, you know, on these few points, and she was just ripping returns, yeah (smiling). It was tough for me today. So yeah, I think all credit to her for being more aggressive, I think, on those most important moments.
Q. Obviously today it was pretty hot outside, and it will be obviously tomorrow. Just kind of how were the conditions out there, and kind of how are you feeling? I know you had that medical time-out. How are you feeling post-match?
WANG XINYU: Not bad. I mean, I could feel the heat today. But yeah, I think there's been a lot of tennis for me the past month and I think body is just kind of reacting on that.
So, yeah, I'm happy I get a few days of rest now before the next one. So, yeah, I'm going to do my best to try to recover and try to take the positives from this week into the next tournament.
Q. In Amanda's post on-court interview she was talking about how she liked playing in front of the crowd, which she was saying was in your favor. Just talk about the support that you received today from your Chinese fan base.
WANG XINYU: Yeah, I mean, not just today. This past week I'm feeling like I feel all the love, all the support from them. You know, we always talking about Eala and how she gets so much support from the Filipinos.
But I think if you look at it, I think the Chinese fans, they're even, I would say, honestly, even better. Yeah, I'm going to leave it, like, there.
Also, they're coming to my match and then, because you can tell, like, there are a lot of fans that have been following me for, like, longer periods already. So I really appreciate that. I hope to see them more often.
Q. What are some of the takeaways from this week that you'll focus on in the time off that you have before those tournaments coming up?
WANG XINYU: Yeah, I think I could really see the improvements that I've been making, like, throughout the pre-season and now through this month.
Yeah, I'm just hoping to keep the momentum and also to keep improving things. You know, not just to -- instead of thinking to maintain, like, this kind of good feeling, I would always want to improve more. Then, yeah, hopefully I can continue playing some good tennis.
