BRISBANE INTERNATIONAL

January 10, 2026

Daniil Medvedev

Brisbane, Queensland, Australia

Press Conference

D. MEDVEDEV/K. Majchrzak

6-7, 6-3, 6-2

THE MODERATOR: Were you surprised today at the level at which Kamil was playing? And after that first set, how did you get back into the game?

DANIIL MEDVEDEV: I think in general, you know, there is this discussion was he stronger before, is he stronger now? First of all, it's impossible to say, for sure.

They always love to compare this in every sport. Jordan, LeBron, France 2020, France '98, who's stronger. You never know, but I do feel like the level of guys, let's say, from top 30, higher than top 30, top 30 till top 100, is probably a bit more even, because Kamil, in my opinion, played the level of top 10 in first set and maybe tiny bit worse in the second, like top 20, and top 50 like third set. But it's not easy to play top-10 level for the whole match.

That's why I'm super happy with the match, because I managed to stay calm, composed, and play amazing tennis with some amazing highlights, I think.

THE MODERATOR: Questions.

Q. What about your level? Do you think you're somewhere near back to your best?

DANIIL MEDVEDEV: Yeah, I think it was close. I would say kind of first set I would put myself at top 10, top 20, because there was one sloppy game on my serve where I missed all the first serves and I lost it. Without this, maybe I win the first set.

And same on the tiebreak, I think I made only two out of maybe five first serves. But second and third set, top-5 level, for sure. Amazing, not missing much, running well, serving like hell, volleys, everything.

So really happy with my level these three matches and looking forward.

Q. What is it about Australia that you like so much over the years?

DANIIL MEDVEDEV: You know what? Never talked about this, but I think the fact that it's after preseason. It's a bit stressful, because you haven't played for like one month and a half, you're probably trying few new things. And when I say "new things," not like and serve and volley on every point, but you kind of try to put the things you worked on, maybe forehand a bit faster or stuff like this, in the match.

So a tiny bit stress. Is it going to work, maybe I'm gonna miss, maybe I'm gonna be scared or something. But at the same time, I love this preseason work. I usually work hard physically. I work hard tennis-wise, mentally, and I usually come out better after the preseason. When you play Turin, you have a shorter preseason, so this is the first time in probably six, seven years I had a longer preseason, and working great.

Q. You mentioned a few days ago, obviously there has been a lot of talk about working with Thomas, but can you speak a bit more about how you're linked with Rohan and what he's been doing with you specifically?

DANIIL MEDVEDEV: Yeah, Rohan is a big part of the team also, because he's, first of all, in daily contact with Thomas, so it's a real duo, if we can say. So it's not like when Thomas is here he's kind of the coach and that's it, and when Rohan is here he's the coach and that's it.

No, they work really together, and from what I feel, they love working together and that's great, because that's the goal. Otherwise it would not work.

Rohan brings -- if I go into details, I would say Thomas is more like a daily to day work, he's every day with me, trying to like follow the process, and Rohan is there a bit less time and kind of same, a bit more technical, like the volley, on the serve, forehand, backhand, maybe a tiny bit like if the ball is high you should do this, on the volley you should do this, a bit more technical.

It's working great. I love working with them.

Q. How did the relationship start? Did you seek Rohan out? Did you, through connections...

DANIIL MEDVEDEV: So when I was looking for the coach, I called a lot of guys who I thought could be potentially, how to say, the ones I would like to be my coach. Some said straightaway no, they were busy or didn't want to, and it's fine.

Some gave me their vision, and I maybe didn't like it or it didn't work out. With Thomas and Rohan, kind of straightaway I liked what they told me, and I liked after working with them in the end of the season. And with Rohan, it's my agent who knew him, so he proposed me to have a talk.

I was kind of skeptical in the beginning, because, you know, he haven't been on tour for a long time, and usually that's not a good thing. But when I talked to him the first time on the phone, he kind of surprised me with the way who could, with few matches that he saw of me, because he was not watching too many of my matches, kind of analyzed my game and kind of say exactly what I felt was not working anymore and what was working before and where I would love to go. I was, like, that's great, you know. And we decided to try.

Q. Obviously the goal is to beat those top two guys who are dominating. Where in your game do you think you can improve to do that this year?

DANIIL MEDVEDEV: I will be honest, when I was top three, top four, I was for sure thinking a lot what to do with Carlos and Jannik, where I can improve and this and that. So for sure also before 2024. Sorry, 2025 season.

Then I never played them last year because I played horrible, and I never got to the rounds to play them (smiling). So this preseason, I didn't think at all about them. I was, like, okay, how do I get back to the level I can play to first of all beating the other guys, and then maybe if I get to play him, I will talk to my new team and we see what we can do.

So that's all I can say kind of, because yeah, again, if I get to play them, it's good, because last year I didn't play good enough to meet them.
