THE MODERATOR: Tough loss, Shane. Was it just a little rust, or was it just simply maybe not the best day for The Bay Golf Club today?
SHANE LOWRY: Yeah, wasn't great. I don't know, we might have thrown our hammers early but we won holes --
WYNDHAM CLARK: We won all three hammers.
SHANE LOWRY: Yeah, we did, but we could have won one of them without it. But yeah, who knows. We gave them too many holes, didn't we.
LUDVIG Ã…BERG: Yeah, way too many.
SHANE LOWRY: Too many balls in the water. Good things they're free.
Q. For Ludvig, did you spend any time in Sweden over the break, and if so, did you get any questions about TGL and sim golf if you had to play or practice back in the cold? Did you get any questions from friends about TGL in the off-season back home?
LUDVIG Ã…BERG: Absolutely. TGL is a big thing in Sweden. Obviously got great response from last year, and people were curious about -- obviously indoor golf in Sweden is a big deal, as well, so this is sort of taking it to the next level.
So yeah, it was great being able to be home for a good chunk of November, which was nice, and obviously nice to be back here, as well.
Q. Kind of a strategy question for you guys. On the second hole early after I believe it was Billy who went in the water, you end up trying to still hit driver to that narrow patch there. Do you have a plan before the match, or are you adapting based on what you're seeing from your opponent?
SHANE LOWRY: It wasn't his decision. Me and him -- he wanted to --
WYNDHAM CLARK: No, it was you.
SHANE LOWRY: It was my fault. I felt like to win the hole we needed to make birdie.
WYNDHAM CLARK: Which was true.
SHANE LOWRY: Yeah. He's Ludvig Ã…berg. He was always going to hit it straight.
LUDVIG Ã…BERG: I think if I had put a good swing on it, we wouldn't be talking about it.
SHANE LOWRY: Ifs and buts.
LUDVIG Ã…BERG: Obviously, if he hits it in the fairway then I have to --
SHANE LOWRY: You've literally got like 10 seconds to make the decision, 15 seconds, so that's what makes it tough.
WYNDHAM CLARK: Yeah, hindsight, we probably should have gone left, but at the same time, we still had to make birdie.
SHANE LOWRY: That's why if that was on the PGA TOUR or in like one of the Match Play Championships you'd have the player and caddie taking three minutes to make their decision, so that's why the shot clock is good.
Q. In hindsight it might not have made much of a difference in the outcome, but what was the thought on declining the hammer on Alpine, on that six-foot putt you guys had?
SHANE LOWRY: It wasn't. It was more like 10.
WYNDHAM CLARK: The one that I had?
SHANE LOWRY: Yeah.
WYNDHAM CLARK: Yeah, it was 10 feet, and we thought if we --
LUDVIG Ã…BERG: It was the one I had. That was the, like, eight-footer left to right.
SHANE LOWRY: There was a decent break in that, and we said you've probably got a 50 percent chance of holing it, and if we give them the hole we're still going to be tied. I think the one thing you don't want to do is lose two points on a hole, so that's why you see nobody really accepts the hammer because teams are starting to figure out when the team throws the hammer they're pretty much guaranteed to win the hole or there or thereabouts anyway.
LUDVIG Ã…BERG: Yeah, two points is hard to come back from.
Q. The course enhancements are pretty cool for the fans. They seem cool for you guys. This year, I know it's early in season 2, but do you find yourself having more fun now that you're not trying to figure it out and get used to it? It's maybe looser and more fun so far? I know you would have wanted the win tonight.
LUDVIG Ã…BERG: Yeah, I think we're definitely more prepared what to expect. I think last year before we played our first match we didn't really know what to expect, but going into today at least you sort of know where you're going to go and know sort of the run of the schedule.
Yeah, it's fun. It's really fun. This is really cool to be a part of.
Q. One more question for Shane. I saw you at the Skins Game, Golf Channel Games, TGL. Are you enjoying this new form of off-season for you or are you ready to get back to 72-hole play?
SHANE LOWRY: I'm looking forward to getting back to the PGA TOUR and the grind of that. But honestly, different is good. I've been on TOUR -- I'm about to start my 18th season on TOUR. It's been a long road.
Even before I came back a few days ago, I flew back from Ireland after Christmas and you're sort of on the plane starting to think about the year ahead, and there's a lot of stress ahead. There's a lot of tough golf. There's a lot of unknowns: How am I going to play this year? You don't know. To have different stuff is nice, and that's what I enjoy about this and I enjoyed about the two things I did before Christmas.
Q. As a follow-up to Shane's point about different stuff, the new holes like Cenote and the Stinger, were you practicing that tee shot as a group? Do you guys like this luck, basically not conventional holes? How do you feel about that?
WYNDHAM CLARK: I think it's great. Simulator golf, I feel like you have to do a little bit of stuff to really make it exciting, and it's not real golf, and if you had a hole like that in real golf, it would actually be amazing.
It makes it fun because I think you get to see us hit certain shots. I love the Stinger hole. I thought the Cenote hole was awesome.
It was unfortunate I hit it right of where I wanted in the practice round. I hit it left side and went to like five feet twice, versus just playing it normal. It's fun. It's creative. I think it's more exciting for the fans.
This is golf but it's not golf. It's kind of like a game, and I think why not treat it like a game and make fun holes. My take, at least.
