Quick Quotes
Q. So you guys have had a pretty steady round and finished 15-under. What was working well for you today and how do you kind of lean off each other playing.
MATT KUCHAR: Got off to an awesome start. I mean, it's so much fun to kind of put a drive out in the fairway, watch Cam smash it. It's not even a consideration of whose ball we're going to use.
So we have a lot of short irons in. Between his wedge game and my wedge game we ended up with a whole lot of short putts. It was a fantastic start.
He hit a wedge on the first to a foot. We both probably have some first hole, first tee jitters, and to get that one out of the way, hit it so close, got us off to a great start.
He was telling me, it was pretty funny. He was like, all right, that's a solo birdie. I hit the drive, I hit the, I being knocked the putt in. That's one for me.
Second hole it was my drive, my wedge, my putt, so let him know, all right, we're one each. He ran a tally up. It was way higher than my tally of solo birdies.
He got the best of me today.
Q. (No microphone.)
MATT KUCHAR: You had to have seven solo birdies, something like that.
CAMERON KUCHAR: At least. I played well today.
MATT KUCHAR: Yeah. Very good day.
Q. And as a dad, how proud are you? You sound so proud just talking about how well he's played. How proud are you playing with him and then just kind of watching him grow?
MATT KUCHAR: It's been so much fun just having this event become part of our lives. To be able to play with Cameron, my younger son Carson, started with playing with dad, so it's certainly a special, special event.
And then each year with Cam we seem to get good chances. We play well the first day and somebody seems to have a great day two and kind of gets the best of us.
But I feel like he's gone two years since he's played last and the improvements in his game was leaps and bounds better than what it was two years ago.
I'm certainly excited to go into Sunday's final round with him in the form he's in. This is some of the best I've seen him play and certainly excited to keep riding the coattails.
Q. And how confident are you, and are you taking this confidence from today and kind of building on it as you strategize for tomorrow?
MATT KUCHAR: Cam is a playing great golf. I feel like I certainly can offer some help when he drives it as well as he does with being able to hit some short irons, wedges, chances to really have good looks at birdie.
It's a really fun format for me. I picked a good partner at the Shark Shootout years ago with Harris English who hit it way by me and I got to hit a lot of short irons in.
And now I feel a little bit the same having this guy be able to drive it the way he does and to try to just see how many birdies we can make.
Q. Cameron, for you, is there anything that your dad has given you, advice that you've used to improve your game?
CAMERON KUCHAR: I work mostly with him on my swing so it's him and his coach Chris O'Connell. I don't see Chris as much as I might like to, but my dad has been with Chris for 15 years now, so he basically knows almost everything Chris knows. Makes it really nice for me being able to just have him at my house every day.
MATT KUCHAR: I think part of the skill as a coach is not to overcoach. Certainly we try to just steer in the right direction and let his athletic talent do a lot of work. We make sure he continues working the right direction. It's been fun to see the improvements.
Q. Is he in Dallas?
MATT KUCHAR: He is in Dallas, looking to move to Florida. I joke with him that I might be moving to Fort Worth. We'll just go crisscross. Let Cam do his thing in Fort Worth. I joke with Chris. It's funny that Chris is going to Texas and -- sorry, Cam is going to Texas and Chris is coming to Florida.
Q. How do you do on the par-5s?
MATT KUCHAR: Mostly good except for one par. I think it was, what, three birdies, one par? We had two water balls. Is that the 14th hole?
CAMERON KUCHAR: 14 hit a perfect drive and then we both hit good shots; didn't cut; right into the water.
Q. Both of you did?
MATT KUCHAR: Both, yeah.
Q. Who hit second?
MATT KUCHAR: That was me. All the places I could hit it, exactly.
Q. Got up and down for par?
MATT KUCHAR: Up and down for par. All in all really, really good day.
Q. Kind of along those lines, sorry, but after making 11 birdies in the first 13, how much of a shock to the system is it to see both of those at 14 go into the water?
MATT KUCHAR: Frustrating. Awfully nice Cam hit three great shots on 15 and you call it a bounceback; it's a par.
But in this format it feels more like a bogey with writing a five on the scorecard on 14. Nice to get right back in the saddle, hit a couple good shots. You do feel a bit deflated walking away from a par particularly after the drive he hit.
So to me, you know, best thing you can do is just get right back on it, and Cam did that on the next.
Q. And then you also kind of mentioned it, you got a history of coming out on fire on the first day and then somebody catches you on the second. So how important was it to keep making birdies until you got to 15?
MATT KUCHAR: Yeah, I think clearly we'll know tomorrow that it's going to take another good day, that we're going to have to make some more birdies and keep making birdies.
The Dalys are certainly a formidable team, but Loves are back and there is a bunch of good names right behind us. So I'm certain in this format lots of birdies will be made, and, yeah, our goal tomorrow is go out, birdie the first and keep it going.
Q. As much fun as you're supposed to be having this week, what's the desire level of winning this?
CAMERON KUCHAR: High.
MATT KUCHAR: We've had our taste of not being able to come away with the title belts. They're super cool. Cam had his eye on those things for a while. You know, our family certainly competition runs strong, and to be at an event like this is certainly an amazing experience. Kind of win lose or draw, you know, it's just a great week, but a bonus if you can come out on top and claim the father/son title. Certainly would be really special.
Q. He said a lot in two words. You just took like three minutes to explain it.
MATT KUCHAR: I told him it's good to be a storyteller. I didn't really navigate much of a story there, but... (laughter.)
Q. One last one for you Cameron. Since you have such an athletic family all the way through, who is the worst loser?
CAMERON KUCHAR: Me.
Q. Who takes losing the worst?
CAMERON KUCHAR: Me, for sure.
MATT KUCHAR: One word answer. See, he could have told you about smashing a pickleball paddle.
CAMERON KUCHAR: Yeah, I've been known to lose it every now and then, but I get -- when I make birdies I get excited so it kind of even ends it out.
Q. Fair enough. Would you agree with that?
MATT KUCHAR: Oh, yeah, oh, yeah, for sure.
