AL CHAMPIONSHIP SERIES: MARINERS VS BLUE JAYS

October 12, 2025

Logan Gilbert

Toronto , Ontario, Canada

Rogers Centre

Seattle Mariners

Postgame 1 Press Conference

Mariners 3, Blue Jays 1

Q. Logan, what can you say about what Bryce did for you guys tonight and also the ability to cover so many innings for a bullpen that was pretty taxed after Game 5?

LOGAN GILBERT: Yeah, that's huge on short rest, for sure. I think he's peaking at the right time. His stuff looks great. Recently he's pitched really well, and like you said, the team kind of needed it, especially playing that extra game. And they got a few days off there, so it kind of helped us out, set us kind of equal, I guess, after the rest.

Q. Logan, when did they let you know you were going to start Game 2, and how much did -- I think it was 40 pitches you threw the other night. How much will that affect you?

LOGAN GILBERT: We talked about it today, and they basically just asked me if I was good to go. Of course I said yeah right away. They wanted me to see how I felt in catch play, if my arm felt normal, and it did.

It was kind of unusual circumstances a few days ago, but I don't know, I treat it as a bullpen or very high-intense bullpen, and hopefully just be feeling good, ready to go.

Q. You talk about how Bryce is peaking at the right time, and certainly the two playoff games we've seen that. What do you see in how he's doing it that sort of reminds you of Bryce Miller at his best?

LOGAN GILBERT: I think he's executing really well, and when he's at his best, he has feel for five or six pitches. That's what he was doing in the second half last year, the curveball, the splitter, under the zone, two fastballs, just a lot of things that not many people can do all that at the same time, and when he's at his best, he's being able to lean on five or six different pitches throughout the outing.

Q. Knowing that you were probably going to pitch in Game 5, how did your routine adjust at all in between starts? Was there any tweaks that you made that will have you ready for tomorrow at all?

LOGAN GILBERT: Yeah, I kind of figured I was coming out of the pen there, so the couple days leading up to that after my start I didn't throw a ton, and a couple days after the bullpen I didn't throw a ton. It's really been kind of game, game, and back to game again. I like to practice a lot and get my work in, but in the playoffs, you kind of just get ready for the games. I've been toning down the practice throws a little bit.

Q. One more about Bryce. Did you see anything in his demeanor today before the game that made you know that he was going to be his best version?

LOGAN GILBERT: He's pretty consistent with who he is and his personality. But I guess, yes, that kind of does play into it, that he's loose, he's confident, he knows who he is. Very unique personality. But he's not the type to get super fired up. I almost feel like that would be out of the ordinary for him.

Like I said, he's at his best when he has all those pitches. He's also at his best when he's really loose and relaxed and confident.

Q. Logan, you've seen Cal do a lot of different things this year at the plate. As a pitcher, how demoralizing is it that you make a pitch, you make one little mistake after retiring him twice, and he hits it a mile? How frustrating is that for a pitcher when he's able to do something like that?

LOGAN GILBERT: Yeah, there's not many people like that, but you really can't make a mistake if you throw 15 or 20 pitches over the course of a game to a certain batter. He has the ability to change the game on any one pitch. It's very tough to go 15 for 15 against anybody, and Cal can swing and miss a couple times and then all of a sudden he changes the game on one swing. It's really hard to face a player like that.

Q. Bryce also said that he doesn't always hear what Cal is saying when they have the mound visits. Do a lot of you guys do that, or how does that work?

LOGAN GILBERT: He has weird mound visits. Sometimes he doesn't say anything, or maybe I'm missing what he says. But he just kind of walks out there and stands there and looks at me. It's kind of awkward sometimes. But I think there's an intention there. I'm trying to figure out what it is. But he knows what he's doing.
