October 4, 2025
Shanghai, China
Mixed Zone
J. SINNER/D. Altmaier
6-3, 6-3
Q. Can you summarize the match for us?
JANNIK SINNER: The first round match is never easy, so I'm very happy to be in the next round. He's a very tough player, very talented, his peak is very high. I just tried to stay mentally in a good point. When I broke him twice very early in the set it gave me the confidence to serve, you know, the match out, so I'm very happy.
Q. Pretty solid serving out there tonight. You only faced the two break points in that 8th game, 88 percent on the first serve points won. Overall assessment?
JANNIK SINNER: Yeah, I mean, it was a good serving day. As I said, when you break quite early in the set it's a bit easier to serve. I served very well in a couple of break points. The second serves were quite heavy. Yeah, very happy.
First match is never easy, especially when you don't have a lot of time to adjust, so I'm very happy.
Q. Tomorrow night it's going to be back-to-back Novak and yourself. It's going to be a real treat for the fans in the night session.
JANNIK SINNER: Yeah, I mean, it's great. Obviously, you know, Novak coming back here to play, it's great for the fans. I'm very early in my career still, but I'm very happy to play after Novak. It's great for the fans, it's great to hopefully watch some good tennis in both matches. Yeah, it's very unfortunate that Carlos is not here also, you know. I feel like Carlos is the man who people want to see in tournaments, so it's very unfortunate he's not here. But, you know, it's still great to have Novak and me and many other players.
Q. First match you come in Shanghai this year, and how do you feel when you step on the court with the atmosphere, the crowd, and everything here?
JANNIK SINNER: Yeah, it was quite packed today, so the atmosphere was great. Just trying to deliver some good tennis, which is the main thing what I would like to do here. But it's great. I have great memories here, so a very positive energy.
Q. Alexander Zverev said after his match today, he was talking about speed of the courts, and he said that the tournament directors are standardizing the courts, making them slower to benefit you and Carlos Alcaraz. I was just wondering if you had any comment on that.
JANNIK SINNER: You know, me and Carlos, we don't make the courts. It's not our decision. We try to adapt ourself in every situation. I feel like still every week is a bit different.
I've played some great tennis even when it was faster courts. But I'm not making the courts, you know, so I just try to adapt and play my best tennis I can, and that's it.
